Let's start out with a quote from someone we should always remember and thank for giving us this home, keeping alive this game we all love oh so very much:
Quote:
"This, Halo CE, is a hobby and a game not a business or a competition. So if you make maps or models to gain praise from other people you will be sorely disappointed. If you make maps because you enjoy it then it doesn't matter what others say or think."

-Dennis

Now with that in mind, I would like everyone to simply state what their motivation for making assets and modding this game are. Do not go into rants, but you are free to respond to other people in a nice and polite manner.

Mine:
I'm here in this community to have fun and make some nice animations for people, have fun doing it, and enjoy seeing people find entertainment from the work I do. I do not care for their praise, but it is always a nice side-dish to what I do.

I'm not entirely sure if I will pursue this[animating] into college and strive to be in a game company to do some animation work and have that be my job, but it's always a possibility I have been given by this game and starting at 13 and getting all the help I've gotten from this community is sure to give me an edge on the competition.

For now though, I'm content being a part of a few projects and animating whatever I can for nice people who ask or the friends I've made here.

So tell me everyone, what is your motivation and your reason for doing what you do in this community? Enlighten me, I'm curious to know.

And please...do not lie to me or yourself.

Been playing Halo 1 since 4th grade. It's still my favorite.
I'm a sophomore in high school...
Modding Halo 1 has always been something I had wanted to do, ever since seeing the mods on H2 back on Xbox Live in 2005. So, I bought Halo PC after my Xbox live subscription ran out. I started playing, then found out you could mod after seeing the Sniper Dream Team Servers in Halo PC. So, I started modding Halo PC, then found CE. I do it because I love it, and it's fun, even if I never show anyone anything that I do haha.

Dude I admire your concern, but it is useless, everyone here are a bunch of inmature kids crying about ripping, this comunnity is unique, no other community is so immature and bad, that's the reason halo ce is dead now, I really admire Dennis, thanks to him this ''comunity'' is more or less alive ,he has no responsibility to do a shiit, and he still are here with a bad kids who dont appreciate nothing, thanks Dennis, seriously thanks.

I do the stuff I do because I love working on game art and design. I also love being able to play my work with others and have fun doing it and love to see everyone else having fun playing the stuff I've worked on.

ODX, this question was worth asking. Lots of people around seem to be taking things too seriously.

Personally I have been playing Halo since it came out on PC( say 6 months after that) and came to CE shortly after it was released. I liked the game, the ambiance, and always had good friends around here. When I got into mapping it was more or less to try and find a way to make roleplayers maps they could enjoy. At that same, everything was pretty much clogged into finding a home between Stunts and Regular maps and it often came to RPs on hugeass and things alike. I made a little test map from a tutorial and then RPG5 right ahead. Thing is, this all became about the fun of placing your imagination into something tangible, something you could walk on and play with. I guess it caused me to often cut corners short detail wise and things alike but personally, if it's not fast enough to keep up with my mind, it's not worth it.

Halo 1 was the first FPS I ever played, (way back in like 5th grade, I'm a sophomore now) and it was definately my favorite by miles. I remember replaying the campaign over, and over, and over, and over again (I didn't have xbox live) Since I learned of modding H2 on the xbox, I've been dying to mod Halo. I remember when I first downloaded Sparkedit and HMT, I went crazy with BG mods, lol. Then once I discovered CE, my imagination really took off. I think that's what really attracts me to this, is that I could potentially create whatever the hell I want in this game. I could create my own universe, with my own combatants, and weapons and backstory. SP maps are my favorite to make just because I love telling a good story, especially if that story involves the heroic defiance of and unstoppable alien force bent on the destruction of humanity. I think it's just the creation process that I like. I really could care less if people like my stuff. Like, it's always great if they do, and I'll be happy if they do, but it's just the actual process of modelling, texturing, tagging, animating, testing, etc, that I find really fun.

Modelling and animating are really fun for me, and I'm definately going to pursue one or the other (or both) into college, and strive for a job in the game development industry. The possiblity of working at a well known company like Bungie or Valve is really exciting for me.

That's my 2 cents.

I love modding this game because the editing kit is so extensive, and you can do some many things with it; even more than it was designed to do. Sapien makes me feel like a little kid in a sandbox where I can release my creativity. I also love the community, which almost always takes things too seriously, but is pleasantly mature and diverse.

Back when I was a crazy little rascal in 5th grade, I became came very ill. IE the common cold. So I was staying home that day, and my mom needed to go to Office depot. So I went with her, and I went to go look at the computer games becuase I had recently got my very own pos laptop (New, though.) I picked up Halo, beat the campaign and then never really touched it again. About 6 months later, in 6th grade, I started messing with Halo again and found Halo CE out. I didn't know how to map, anything about modeling, anything about game design, or how to really do anything at all at making video games. I was clueless. One day my dad bought a case of monster; good stuff. I decided to sit down on that hot summer day and start working on my first map ever, the crappy map on this website titled "Bighill". After countless box maps made, I finally tested myself against plane modeling (yes.. lol), and started to make my first "decent" maps. From there on, I've became a pretty decent mapper, meeting new people, and learning new techniques and more things to game design every day.

I don't make maps for fame; I do it for fun and to learn new things and make new friends in the community. I hope in the future that I can peruse this. It is fun and I enjoy doing it.

Was around 7 when I got my hands on Halo 1 on xbox. Hated it, cause I couldn't find Captain Keyes.
Came back a year later, actually put some effort into it, and finished the first level. Then, my sister and I, went through the levels rapidly. Was a really exciting experience.

I mod Halo CE because it's fun, and the satisfaction of working on something, and it finally turning out right, is great. Also, it gives a chance to be part of a community, and to have friends, albeit American ones :P

Perhaps I'll attempt for the game design industry- but for now, I'm just here to have fun.

I've been Playing Halo: Combat Evolved Since 2006. Came into CE and Xfire in 07. Had a blast. Got into RPing through Skydiving with a great friend. Saw the possibility with CE. Modded in PC for some laughs. Now i'm just here, meeting the minds that have the mentality to make such amazing maps and the Patience to stick with CE and keep it alive. This Community is a Small town. Anything said is spread. No Secrets. Just us and the game. There should be 2 things going throughout the Mapmaking community. Maps, and Criticism. The Rest is human error that'll make your hair white if you even bother to step into it.

I do it because it's something i'm good at doing. Modeling BSP's takes my mind off of other things. And when you get it in-game and it looks like you imagined it, you feel a sense of accomplishment. I make maps because it makes me feel good, and I also like to see my friends play and like it. It's all about the fun factor, and when you're playing on something you made yourself than the fun factor is high.

To me making levels for Halo is a form of art, and it is pretty cool to see something you made be admired by other people and like it.

I want to verbally beat up people so far younger than myself that I barely remember what I was like back then. It gives meaning to my life. At least that is what one person told me I wanted from the forum. :)

I opened this site because I liked the Halo Custom Edition game and since it was unsupported I knew that it would take someone with some resources and business acumen to create a home for it and distribute the maps. Since all the other HCE sites were hit or miss and up and down I made a commitment to keep a stable, free to use, open to everyone file archive of the maps people made. Verbally beating up on teenagers was just a bonus.

Dennis, I can't stress enough the amount of thanks I give to you for making this site and paying out of your own wallet to keep it up and running. It means a lot to me, and I'm sure it means a lot to everyone else.

Ha, thanks for editing my font size a bit, I was just trying to get it across that I just want people to state and respond to the question and that's it. Guess I went overboard with it.

Not at all. I think the thread is a very good one and with the correct sentiment of introspection and possible awareness many forget about.

Well let's see:

-I play Halo because it is the most consistent fun i've ever had in a game.
-I have modded Halo and attempted mapmaking because I wanted to make a good map and fun mods.
-I am now mapmaking maps for consistent enjoyment and for fun on the multiplayer and single player sections. Multiplayer has always engaged me because there have been my own strategies in maps I've wanted to implement whenever I played Halo before and I love telling the story while having a kickass SP to tell the story with.
-Bungie is one of my greatest influences with my mapmaking process. Some may say they are just another business, but I really see that they work to make the game fun and enjoyable for players around the world. I have that same mentality also.

That sums it up for me. That's generally why when people give too harsh of criticism, or talk about criticism but never describe how to properly do something, it sets me off. This game and modding it is my hobby. Some people play only CoD and some people play a variety of games. Some people play a variety of sports and some people play a single sport. Some people build replicas and some collect items. I mod Halo and that's my hobby.

My motivation?

for the fame.

but no srsly.

What I did, and still sometimes do was just something that kept me entertained, and I had fun with it. Until I thought "OMFG YES H3MT WANTS ME IN :DDDDDDDDDD". That was fun for a few things, but then i didn't like having to do stuff. Same with when I joined sigma, except when I did, i knew i wouldn't get a lot done, and I told who recruited me that.

I now really just do random stuff for the game here and there, and don't reveal most of it publicly. :P

It was fun, but since the whole discussion of protection and different viewpoints on them I don't really converse anymore or do anything for CE.

And the people banging on other people because they just mod maps. Last time I checked, when you can't concentrate on a sole thing for more than a few minutes, you're never gonna get it finished. It would be nice if people didn't care that some maps are just mods. Honestly, some of them are good. I realize this as well, and we all have to admit that all the bloodgulch mods mean that the game is still somewhat alive.

If protection DIDN'T exist this place would probably be a much nicer place. But unfortunately, there is nothing we can do about it now.

$50 says that someone will post with a counter-argument to mine about why Protection is good and that tutorials teach people how to use 3ds

I like feeling like god, thats basically it really. being able to make things with the skills i have (Which there are very few of) is all that matters to me, the ability to be able to learn something and then use it.

Halo was the first fp game I have ever played as well. I love playing the game and it was and is a life saver for me. A motivational thing if you will. Halo was fun and soon found that you could do this custom thing and started following it like there was no tomorrow. Later on I found that I had some good Ideas around gameplay but could not put together any kind of map until I downloaded a trial of 3ds max and and followed the wolf clans basic map tutorial and pow! I am in love with mapping and more so modeling and animation. There is alot to learn ,but, The tools Halo ce gives you is very versitile and unlimited to the imagination. Other engiens are cool but most are preset. ce you can make the environment the way you truley like. I never would have found these talents if not for halo ce. This is one of the greatest games and one of the greatest communities out there.

Dennis, you and your site or awesome and gives us old f@rts insperation, Props to the op. Nice post.
Crazy matrix is the first halo mod that peaked my curiosity in making custom maps.

I originally joined this community as a 'general noob' , i liked coldsnap, hugeass etc. I also went about trying to make maps of my own, using stock bsps. I did not release anything really, and then I found the forums. I soon realised that a 'good map' was about the gameplay, not what vehicles it had, or weapons. I used to post in threads giving my view and ideas, helping them the best I could. Along the way I made a few friends, who I would talk to and generally have fun with. Then I lost interest, coming to the forums less and less, and generally playing less, until the point, now, that i hadn't come to the forums in months, let alone posted, or played halo.
Recently I have re-installed Halo 1, but not CE, and lurking the forums since I have found no real reason to post. I guess this is a 'hey, I'm back.' ... I was originally in this community to give ideas, as thats what I'm best at, but now, i do not know, yet. Looking forward to see what's happening.

I do the stuff I do because it's fun. I also do it because Halo CE is a completely unique game and I enjoy the series. I also want to get into game art, and Halo was kind of the start of my interest.
