Today, Marty O'Donnell has announced on his Twitter account that he has been terminated from Bungie. Something tells me he hasn't left on good terms...

good job bungie, remove the guy behind one of the best parts of your games

I mean I know post-release/post-product completion layoffs are a very real thing in the game industry, but damn Bungie always went out of their way to portray this tight-knit group of people, almost like a huge studio of gamer roommates who just happened to be devving a game.

He was fired, he didn't quit. There is a difference and I believe he was in a few of the Destiny videos.

Pretty stupid to fire the guy if you ask me, he is one hell of a composer and has arguably made a few of the best video game music tracks.

Either way though studio layoffs are a very real thing and not even higher ups can be definitely be terminated when necessary. It's strange though because I never really considered Bungie having this "board of directors" before, but I guess it always has.

If I'm not mistaken, one of the only original members left is Jason jones himself... Joe staten, Alex seropian, and now Marty o'donnell. Weird...

Now that I see this, I wouldn't be too surprised if Jason leaves next.

If this was a joke it would be the worst one I've seen in a while. This is absolute crap, give us the reason. Unless these new guys at Bungie (because there's 500 people working on Destiny these days) reaaalllllyy fought against him or he against them as a longtime veteran of the company, this is a stupid and terrible blow to Bungie and is bound to anger a lot of other veteran Bungie employees.

Edit: Looking around I see discussion about money as an issue, somehow? Seeing as Marty has been there a while, I would imagine he got paid a lot and/or the respect he garnered was too threatening to this "board of directors," and they let him go. And with him gone they could spend more money on additional freelance idiots to work on the game, instead of keeping one of their trump cards to make an entire portion of the game literally sound amazing.

Sounds something akin to power play.

Remove those with power and fill in the void they leave behind.

Jesus Christ I thought of Bungie as some sort of close-knit developer, but now with Joe and Marty gone they're taking a big hit.

I saw an (unconfirmed) post about a possible reason:

Quote:

Okay. So I can't give out too much detail here, but I will let you know what I know. Marty was a contracted employee, he didn't just get a fee for each game he produced. Marty had received a significant raise in the last few years, but was now asking for another. This created tension between him and the board (some of whom already felt he was overpaid).

A verbal argument ensued recently between Marty and a member of the board. Shortly there after he was let go. So there was certainly 'cause' but one that a lot of us felt could be worked through. But money talks. The board feels they can get someone for cheaper, and without the drama, that will have a better ROI.

So basically it seems that tensions rose to a breaking point, one the board felt they couldn't work past, or didn't want to deal with, so they let Marty go. I'm not saying it was right (I don't think it was), but that is the situation.

Why not just deny his request?

Because they felt they could get "someone for cheaper, and without the drama".

I've always thought he was kind of a dick, but this is still pretty surprising news, and certainly not good for Bungie.

I have no clue whats going at bungie, but afaik the only people left at Bungie from the original game are Shi Kai wang and Jason Jones now. Jaime Grieshimer (SP?), Marcus Lehto (who was left bungie now not once, but twice), Joe Staten, and now Marty are all gone. I think Chris butcher is still here too actually, now that I think of it. So 3 people left?

3 sounds about right but keep in mind that if we go all the way back to when bungie started with their first game, Jason Jones is really the only one left now.

The soundtrack by marty is already done probably, but they just made one of the stupidest decisions they could ever make, he practically is the John Williams of the game industry. If Jason Jones (or any original empoyee at Bungie) somehow leaves/gets kicked off, I will loose faith in Bungie's future endeavors.

Well Marty, Joe, and Lehto weren't there at the start either. Pretty sure it was just Jones and Seropian for Gnop

lets be honest, if bungie cared about their fans to begin with, they would never have signed an exclusivity deal. where there's a will, there's a way. (and before anybody says, "oh, but they needed M$s money, blah blah [hurrdurr torll voice]" they could've gone elsewhere, heck i'd have loved if they went with THQ) but it is pretty disheartening with skilled teams/artist loose all of their original members and the dream changes form into something else entirely.

Well, you guys might be looking at him like he is a good guy who did such and such, which he might be and might have done. But on the other hand if whatever higuy thought was true, then these might be some possibilities. He might (might) be sort of a dick or something. He may also be greedy for maybe already having a high pay (if he does have a high pay) and asking for more. Maybe both. (probably, not saying he is) I mean of course. It might not be the case. He might be a great guy who isn't greedy. But who knows but the people who knows him and works with him.

Also, of course it could just be the board being the pricks and just wanted someone cheaper.

Someone in this situation was probably being a prick. Somebody. We don't KNOW who.

IIRC Joseph Staten is now working directly for microsoft. Without a doubt a-shame seeing the core of bungie fall apart, makes me feel like Halo was keeping it all together.

I think the bungie shareholders had more of a part in firing Marty than Bungie, whether seeing Marty as an obstacle to their ideas for Bungie or his massive influence.
