I'm from Australia so I get about 200-300 ping from American servers, which is why I no longer play Halo.
The map looks incredible, but I do object to the name. By the way do the doors actually open/close? Doesn't that cause syncing issues?

.device_machines that are controlled by switches do not sync. Ones that don't use switches do sync. I think.

Quote: --- Original message by: CAG Gonzo Ok, first off, my map is no longer a remake of Extinction. Not even in the loosest of terms. The concept carries over, albeit at a modified value. Therefore, it is no longer a remake of a 'bad map', but instead a spectacularly designed culmination of various successful aspects of other maps, mostly Bungie-created.
Last I checked bungie has not made any maps where you fly around in invincible vehicles for 5 minutes before seeing anyone, sorry.
I would like to contest the name, however; as other users have already pointed out, I have put the name in various places scattered about my hard drive...changing the name would prove a tedious effort.
I've been at this for four years, all changing the map name requires is taking your .scenario and saving it under a new name :s
Technically, I publicly posted my intent to call my map Requiem on 10 AUG 10. Your thread dates to 05 MAR 11. I believe by those standards, I have 'dibs' on the name. But I want to resolve this here and now. Your map looks great, and I almost want to request some segments to add to the final interior section of Requiem.
A halomaps thread, as I've already pointed out, hardly constitutes the amount of time in development, let alone rights to a map names :s
So, please respond with your thoughts. Perhaps a new name can be worked out. My answer probably would have been different if what you were making looked anything like a map that has the potential to play well, and not something doomed to be incredibly popular among the bad players who play the maps like it (read most of the ce community). Quote: --- Original message by: SiMuLaCrUm map looks good

The map looks incredible, but I do object to the name. By the way do the doors actually open/close? Doesn't that cause syncing issues? It probably would have helped a lot if I was able to get a time out of my moda bros earlier than 4 hours before the test. As for the doors, automatic doors are controlled by player proximity, player positions are tracked by the server, and relayed to clients, therefore players will be in the position to activate them both server and clientside. Quote: --- Original message by: Ubergoober hmm, this sounds like it could be resolved privately, not publicly.
Damn, I missed the alpha test, how did it go? would have been nice if there was a gametime, it was probably like 5 or 6am here in australia, i was probably sound asleep. Probably closer to 10am-12pm, but yeah, I'll make sure we get a time out atleast a day before this time. Edited by SeL on Apr 9, 2011 at 10:18 AM

This is true. However, you cannot extend this statement to my map, as it is not a copy, rip, or remake of Extinction. I used to love that map, but it attracts some of the worst players in CE. Too noobtastic, hence this weird long and drawn out process that is called multiplayer design, which you seem to have conveniently overlooked. Ask yourself this: does it seem logical that I would go through all this effort of making a fantastic map, just to have it left to rot by leaving everything up to the noobtacular par of Extinction? If you're getting an answer other than 'no', you have problems with some process of your logic.
I've been at this for four years, all changing the map name requires is taking your .scenario and saving it under a new name :s
I'm sorry. Do you have access to my hard drive? No? So you don't know where I have references to Requiem. I have dozens of scenes bearing the name in some aspect, not to mention several documents describing the plan, process, testing procedures, etc. Renaming them, while not difficult, would certainly be tedious. Not to mention, I've been operating with Requiem as the name for over two years.
A halomaps thread, as I've already pointed out, hardly constitutes the amount of time in development, let alone rights to a map names :s
Perhaps, but it does alert the public to your intent. You can say you've been working on a map named Requiem for 10 years if you want. But if no one else knew that, and someone else comes along and publicly declares their intent to use the name before you do, well you don't really have anyone to be mad at other than yourself. I get you had the name first (in this case), but no one else can vouch for you (again, in this case), and you can't (more than likely) offer concrete proof. This is how most things of this nature work.
My answer probably would have been different if what you were making looked anything like a map that has the potential to play well, and not something doomed to be incredibly popular among the bad players who play the maps like it (read most of the ce community).
Geez man. No need to get all pissy. SI could extend similar conjectures to your map if you want to take that route. We can all find things wrong here. You clearly don't seem to be a big fan of large, open maps. But your logic here fails in that you seem to think I'm going to use the same noob-based weapon and vehicle palettes.
Let me make this clear: a lot of thought is going into tailoring the tags to help coerce a tactical application of effort on the part of the player. Translation: I'm working hard to cut down the noobiness of the palettes. If you can't accept that, fine. But stop bringing it up, because this map is no longer a copy, rip, remake, or anything else other than a large map with some smaller minimaps within.
I understand the majority of the CE community is under-aged and incredibly nooby at playing the game. But they'll still have maps like Extinction and Coldsnap to go noob to their heart's content. Requiem is for intelligent, strategic and tactical players. Ive spent a lot of time not only considering how to tailor the tags to this style of gameplay, but also how to tailor the BSP to discourage camping in places, using any one vehicle or weapon throughout the game, and so on, so forth.
If you don't like big maps, that's your opinion and I won't try and convince you to leave it. But quit whining about mine. I'll take your criticism, but you haven't given me anything other than a modified statement of your hatred for large maps filled with nooby palettes. If you have something specific related to the map itself, lay it on me.

Quote: Alrighty then. This map is my first That is from your thread. Point #1: it's your first map, selentic has made numerous other maps, hes more experienced. Ever heard of seniority? Point #2: Shat on steriods is still going to taste like shat. Extinction deserves to be laid to rest. You've apparently gone away from your original concept anyway. Point #3: Whining and crying like a 5 year old isn't going to add many brownie points on your halomaps record. You're going to be remembered as the little prick who tried to argue with one of halomaps finer map makers. Point #4 Selentic is completely right about your map. All you have to do is rename your ______.scenario file to say barnie's_play_mansion, run it through tool, and you got barnie's_play_mansion.MAP. It aint that hard, so deal with it. Point #5 No offence, but Selentics map is of better quality than yours, by quality rights, i'd say he gets to choose what to call his better map. Point #6 This is HIS thread, not yours. Unless you got constructive criticism, get out, because you aren't adding much to this thread at all.

No - I think Selentic is being an jerk. Regardless of your quality or experience, you KNEW there was a map being made, and decided to name your map the same name and then posted your rude opinion about his work.
How about I punk you both? I can release a map today with that name. (ooops someone already beat me to it - there is a map in the queue with that name).
Think of it this way, when Yoyo was making his map, and hadn't yet released it what is someone else decided to name their bloodgulch mod "Yoyorast?"
As you have pointed out, changing the scenario name will be easy. Quality or seniority have nothing to do with courtesy as you have proven here. Want respect? Show some.

wrong I had no knowledge of the map until someone mentioned it here. Also if you guys really think being cute and releasing a bad map just to spite me by using the name is going to bother me, you'd be wrong lol. Actually, it's not the first time anyone's pulled that on me either, last time was with sympathy, and iirc Dennis blocked it because of that~ Edited by SeL on Apr 9, 2011 at 07:13 PM

As you have pointed out, changing the scenario name will be easy. Quality or seniority have nothing to do with courtesy as you have proven here. Want respect? Show some. Such elegant poetry. What he said is what I was saying, but I suppose the words I chose led to different interpretations. The fact that some of you seem to think I'm throwing a temper tantrum because I chose to fight for the name for my map politely instead of just ignoring SeL leads me to believe that you 1) aren't paying attention to anything but your own contorted views, and 2) that no amount of discussion will persuade you otherwise. Oh, seniority, huh? You mean that interesting social trait that arises when people become familiar and friendly with an individual, then as time progresses, begin siding with said individual, and fighting for what he wants? Yeah, that's not seniority. It's popularity. And it has no correlation to whose map should get the name. SeL may be more experienced, and I recognize he has seniority over me because of his experience, but that doesn't mean I'm evil for defending my desire to keep my map named as is. My map is no longer shat on steroids. For the last time, people, stop using that in your arguments. I'm unclear as to what part of 'Requiem is no longer a rip, copy, or remake of Extinction' you are misunderstanding. It started out as a plan to overhaul the Extinction concept; nothing more. Again, I'm not whining. Say again: I am not whining. If I need to repeat it for you a third time, then all hope is lost for you. I chose to confront this issues. What if SeL releases his Requiem, and I release mine, with neither of us giving thought to each other's work. Would you not say that is disrespectful and rude, on both of our parts? Thus, I have brought this up now, instead of ignoring it, as SeL has done. Newbkilla, how about you go back and read my response to SeL before saying all I have to do is rename my scenario file? You might learn something, and can avoid coming off as a fool who is making inaccurate/incomplete assertions. Sel's map is of higher quality to you. In my opinion, my map is better than his. SeL will feel the same way (about his map). You can't use personal opinion as a concrete base for determining who has rights to the map name. Want some criticism? Here it is: I was impressed with the design. It is apparent that a lot of thought went into designing a close-quarters map of a sophisticated Forerunner design. Many aspects are in keeping with Bungie's precedences, and in some ways, SeL's works surpasses them. However, I do have my own complaints (if you will):
- The use of lights is heavily overdone. I don't think you need nearly that many.
- The use of the metal panels generator bitmap is also overdone. In my opinion, there are too many lights and light strips to look at, and it detracts from the opaque quality of the design and mapping.
- Not a complaint, but those doors are freaking awesome. I saw talk of them earlier in the thread. Did you make them yourself, or did somebody else design them?
- I tend to agree that Forerunners tend to stick to angular surfaces and construction, instead of circular designs. As such, in my opinion, I would remove some of the circular elements, either entirely, or replace them with faceted designs.
- Those weird circular sink-ins underneath the teleporters are...interesting. I think they should either have more surface detail, or should extend deeper into the map, so the players cannot see the bottom. As it is now, they just look like a dumb way to add something else to look at (no offense).
- There are some mapping fails (the term I apply to any face that has distorted mapping, or none at all) throughout your map, but I suppose you already know that, as you released an alpha.
- I was going to add comments about the sky and visibility of some geometry, but I'll hold until you release a portalled version with a sky.
- The 'levitating' (map is apparently suspended at altitude) concept is certainly new when associated with a map of this quality, but I don't think parts your map work well with that concept, namely the corridor that encircles the map at its farthest edge.
Oh, and you say you had no knowledge of my map's massive thread at the time you started yours? A search of the forums would have easily revealed it. I searched the forums and the download index before committing to Requiem. On top of that, the fact that you did nothing after hearing about it strikes me as discourteous. You marched on as if you had automatic rights to the name. I'm not saying I do either, but some clarification on your part would have been nice.

Gonzo has had the idea public first, end of story. His Requiem thread is proof of that. Also, I don't see why you both are obsessed over the name 'Requiem'... It doesn't even fit your map very well, Sel... might I suggest another name, such as 'Elevation', or 'Leviathan', or etc. Requiem just doesn't feel right for your map. It seems like a name for a more large-scale battle type of environment, such as something like Extinction (though a more suited name would be shat on the floor.) But who cares what I think, I'm just a lurker...
