Thanks, I like it as well. I'm trying to work with halo's limitations on how the textures are layed out and still have a nicely detailed grass/ rocky area. I'll fiddle with it more.

Funnily enough, grass in the later games kinda does look like rock sometimes.

After seeing more pics, I would like to make another suggestion. Turn down the contrast on the metals, it's a little too intense. Let the specular and bump create the variation.
Any who, once again looks awesome and I can't wait to see it on my comp :)

The cliff wall is the only thing I see bad (besides from rocky grass), it shouldnt tile up and down, only side to side becuase you should add the grass at the bottom of the cliff wall so they both blend more easily. Edited by Higuy on Dec 20, 2010 at 06:15 AM

Edited by Higuy on Dec 20, 2010 at 06:15 AM It's not tiling up and down, and I know what ya mean about the blending, going to work on it more as soon as I have time. I should have more shots up later or tomorrow. As for the "rocky grass" here, the way bungie set up the maps there is only 1 detail texture running over both the sand/rocky areas and the grass area. I can't pick and choose where I want these textures to show up and where I want them to stop. I'm not creating a new map here, just trying to create what I can, given the limitations of what I'm working with. Same thing goes the halo level. It's either I have rocky looking grass, or grass looking rock. Add on top of that, the detail texture in this level also has to work with the 3rd night level with the rock environment. Bungie reuses many many textures and the only reason you didn't really catch it before because the textures they used were really low res and stretched out really really wide. Why did you quote the entire last post for that? Nevermind, and I see the point you are making. Either way it still looks better than Halo 2 and some parts of Halo 3.

So change the detail and micro detail maps? I did that for Lumoria and it doesn't look rocky on the grass areas.

Quote: --- Original message by: Higuy So change the detail and micro detail maps? I did that for Lumoria and it doesn't look rocky on the grass areas. I'm still working with them, what I was saying is that the detail maps are being used across many different levels and on many different surfaces like rock grass dirt etc and I've been trying to come up with a map the fits many roles. The reason why they weren't that apparent before was because they were super low res and didn't really serve much function other than a bit of shading here and there with the original textures. Don't get me wrong (and I've been short, I apologize) the crits here are helping so much and you guys have been so helpful. I want this to be the best it possibly can, its just so fustrating to make some of these textures work with each other. It's been a giant balancing act to get things looking uniform across the entire game. Anyways, I just wanted to say thanks for the support here. I'll have more updates soon.

Doing a detail map that fits all levels is going to constrict your abilitys alot.
I would recommend just making your own detail maps as needed, like your doing with the other textures. Just replace them and relink them in the shaders as needed. It may be a few more textures then the original campaign, but its not like it will hurt the end product.

I'll see what I can do about changing it up, maybe I can release different files with just the detail maps that builds upon the main texmod file so people can change it up depending on what map they are playing/ multiplayer maps they like. Anyways, I changed the rock texture a bit and toned down the detail a little so the texture reads better. I also changed the coloring and lightened it up a bit. Here are some current wip pics

I dunno about the rest of you but can you like, you know, link us to this program with these beta textures so that we can enjoy a beta 1 or something while you complete this? This looks sooo damn awesome that I wished Bungie hired you as a texturer :)

The cliff walls definitely look better, but I noticed that the "sand" looks more like dried up desert dirt.
Please fix that, it will look better. Also the tree's bark also looks a bit to dark. I suggest making it lighter.

heh thanks guys, as for a beta release I'm not so sure. I was planning on releasing a version one really soon (so I guess you could call that a beta... I dunno) with the promise of releasing more and more as I work on it. For release 1 I wanted to at least have most of the environment textures worked on and maybe a few weapons with releases down the line having enemies and npc characters changed as well as vehicles and online maps as well. Right now I'm working on completing a few more textures for the silent cartographer.
Higuy - I took your advice, lightened up the trees some and changed the detail texture to something a lot more sandy and it looks soooooo much better. I'll have more pics up soon and maybe a video of it in motion. I also changed up the wave texture.

Have you figured out a way to run applications with parameters? On second thoughts, if not: I'll have a buddy of mine modify the haloce.exe to automatically enable selected parameters. Edited by Mr K on Dec 24, 2010 at 02:24 AM
