Ok I managed to fix the shading issue on the handle, also added the front lower part of the handle which has a hole in it, however due to me having no idea how to make a hole through things I had to attach a seperately made ridge, and I could not weld the vertices at the points where they met with those of the main model, hence the unsightly seams around the ridge. If someone could tell me how to make a hole or weld vertices of originally seperate shapes I could remake the front part.
Here's how it currently looks like.

Render a closeup of that area with wireframe on. When i say closeup I mean so all of that area fills the render. And put that dam filter on so it's better quality.

Also, change the background color to a dark grey, rendering on black is bad.

Don't do clay render unless you light it properly with gloss. It will hide the errors.

Right, I forgot that. My usual camera script automatically sets up the glossy material for me.

I got rid of the loop thing at the front, I'm gonna remake it as an extension of the main part of the handle, as it should be.

Now, what is clay modelling, and what is PB? and how do I change the colour of the background of the render.

E: Uploaded a wireframe of the current appearance.

Hit 8 (default) to open a thing where you can set the background. I have no idea what PB is in this context. To me PB just means PunkBuster. heh

Way too unneat and bendy. Guns (and most machinery) should be made of straight parts. The ridge at the top middle (or loop, or w/e) should be straight instead of bending downwards like it's been dented.
Find a picture of the gun and see how its parts are mainly straight.

The trigger is a tad too far from the grip, the barrel clips badly at the point where it joins the middle part, and the front part of the barrel isn't round. The trigger is too low-poly, it should be more rounded. You also need to know which parts of the gun are seperate parts from which other parts. For example, the stock is a simple triangle, the protrusions you added on the bottom are a seperate part so they should have been a seperate shape, or at least have some indicators (such as notches and not-gradual change in width) that they are seperate.

E: Woot, finally finished modfying the Plasma Rifle.

That took you 40 minutes!?!?

This is one of my 5 min models.

Well. The modeling took about maybe 5 min's. The render took... well... a VERY long time.

EDIT because it wasn't there(?)

Try finding some modeling tutorials.

http://ghost.halomaps.org/tutorials/

That is a great place to find tutorials on just about everything. And as will be said later try to model different pieces and then combine them.

my input would be, try not to model everything in one giant thing. there's many different parts to a gun that could be modeled separately. many of the shapes can be modeled from the standard primitives MAX lets you start out with (cube for the body, cylinder for the barrel, etc) if you're anal about polycount, and you get the chance, be sure to have little details like screws as objects going completely through the gun, or better yet, built into the texture.

if you're looking to get something in-game, you're going to want it rigged. by this, I mean you're going to want the clip to be able to come out, the trigger to be pulled back, the bolt to be pulled back, etc. you can rig these to separate objects rather than bones, which would allow for more fluidity

Really though, I do suggest you watch tutorials and modeling techniques. I see overlapping faces, smoothing errors, and overall poor modeling

Nice work man, I would not have expected something like this from you. Let this be an example for people who claim they cannot model at all without even trying - I seem to recall IcePhoenix starting to model only a month or so ago, and he can already produce a usable model. Kudos.

it's not really my own work, I just adjusted the original PR a bit. somehow the changes added about 2000 more polies, count is 8202.
So is it actually gonna be usable it was made in 3ds Max 2011?

Hello, this is my first time posting in the weapons wip thread, but I want to show the weapon I'm making, I can't think of a name so I just went with m-82.

I know i'm not a great modeler and also with bitmaps, but if you have recomendations that would be nice.

Hmm pistol-grenade (pull trigger, throw) is a pretty good concept lol.

The pistol looks pretty overbalanced, move the trigger and grip closer to the front.

Btw don't abandon the hairdryer version, it's kinda cool.
