I don't understand how the modelers can make any perfect model with a plane ? Me, when I make a model, I use always boxes or cylinders. Like this (WiP):

the thing is usually box/cylinder models end up boxy and unnatural(at least as a gun), i sometimes make the boxmodel first as a rough model, then do plane modeling, i like it more and more as i use it :P

A plane is easier to manipulate than a box, saves polygons (being a one-sided face), allows you to shape details better and easier, and is better for making symmetrical objects.
If you were to model the FN F2000, a very complex, symmetrical, and more organic (lol) shaped weapon, you would rather use a plane than a box to shape out the complex curves, save polygons, and make it easier to use the symmetry modifier.

And im guessing your not using the Symmetry modifier and modelling both sides of the weapon?

Well if the weapon is the same both sides then what's the point in modelling them both? Model one and Mirror it, or use the Symmetry modifier so you can see the changes on the other side as your modelling. Here, just made this to try and explain: Url: http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g268/martynball/symmetry_modi.jpgEdited by anonymous_2009 on Sep 8, 2010 at 09:50 AM

If you delete the middle face as the Symmetry modifier welds the verts in the middle of the object.

well, in wings3d, u can jsut duplicate after making the mirror side flat(just delte all the polys and make planar, then just bridge, and collapse the extra edges. a bit more work. or u can use the break mirror option(dont know y its called break mirror, not just mirror). but they are right plane modeling is more effective. :P

Quote: --- Original message by: Advancebo why are the normals on the stock flipped backwards. I haven't the faintest idea. Not even sure what that means. Also I did not model much of it. Actually I might not have made anything myself. I just put them together. Actually I did model the insides of the weapons. Umm. Not sure exactly what all I modeled. Credit to the maker of some SMG and a Barrett. Don't remember who made them. -Skidrow

Looks very uncomfortable to hold. It also lacks general shape on what it's supposed to really look like. You also need to work on your smoothing a bit. There's a pic around here somewhere that shows how to properly do it...

I haven't really worked with the smoothing on it yet. As for the handle that parts been difficult because i eff'd up on it earlier and was unable to undo :( so i'm trying to find a good fix for that still :). hmm just looked at the pictures and noticed the end of the stock is screwed up... wonder how that happened *goes to fix it*

When you post the images , can you please put img tags so we can see it without having to click that one more time =) I can't make out what your gun is supposed to be. Rifle? Shotgun? Well , you need to really fix the area between the stock and the main body. It looked like a fish or something.

Yeah sorry about that i normally would just post the pictures but didnt feel like putting a montage of pictures i'll think about the lazy people next time i post pictures. And it's a rifle (only 'cause i hate animating shotguns). And the said fish part has been removed (if its the part im thinking it is).

When I saw your pictures , my first thought was : "Sturgeon fish models! I suppose the virtual mafia will come and take some caviar." About the montage of pictures, I think 1 wireframe would be ok , taken from a diagonal angle from the front of the gun.

I understand that this is a very alpha model , but where is your handle? The barrel looks very small too. Enlarge it. I see that box sticking out of the side of the gun. It's too thick. Cut the length of the box in half. Looks promising though..

Looks promising though.. the handle i still need to model (has to be separate due to reason i explained a few posts up) the barrel will be enlarged (i see what you mean by that) and possibly lengthened\shortened. And i see what you mean with the box being to long i haven't been looking at it from a side view so i didn't notice. Thank you for the tips i shall get to it once i finish school :D E: i'm stumped on a concept for the handle, if anyone has a good idea please do say :) Edited by Amazingcuziam on Sep 9, 2010 at 03:49 PM
