What CPU do you have? 8 cores doesn't tell us a whole lot. 3ds Max 2010+ is also a prerequisite. It doesn't really matter though, we're near the end. Work can't be parallelized any further at this point.

Back to CMT. Why do DLM's take so long to render? I'm curious since I was told that DLM's provide a faster and more customizable approach to lighting your map.

It really depends on the area and how many fixes we need to run. Both of the final two lightmap sets that have been causing delays have a LOT of omnis making up strip lights. This was unavoidable but resulted in a 20 minute+ prep time per lightmap. When you're talking about over 60 lightmaps, and 3 dlms per lightmap in addition to the standard (so at least 240 lightmaps), that very quickly begins to rack up render times.

At this point our renders are almost entirely fixes, our initial primary renders finished a while ago. The closer you get to releasing of course the more you find to fix, but we can't afford to chase perfection forever.

amd fx 8350 eight cre processor 4.01 ghz (clocked with out water cooling)
currently 20 gb of ram (will be adding 8 more soon.)

2 ati radion [crossfired] 3870 x2

can also be sli swapped with 2 nvidia geforce gtx 9800+ if those are any better for halo.

AMD FX's are beasts!

But all the onlie reviews say that the AMD FX chipset's are unworthy of even being mentioned next to the i5 and i7.

Hopefully sometime in the middle of the year I'll have amassed enough High Quality made in malaysia parts for my first rig.

I already have two GPU's, cooling setup and so on. I'm just waiting to see if intel will release a 5th gen I7 or maybe an upgrade, or if I can buy an FX for a lot less yet still be able to experience the power of an i7.
