hmmm good point.... maybe put it in different segments that aren't too close to each other? or possibly a couple quiet moments of striking fear from noises and shaking and maybe an explosion, or tears in a path as shown in a cutscene (you know, the whole "its just screwing with you" kind of moment)

This was just a test. Another idea was the scarab beam would always be active but it would just aim from right to left, left to right, and go on like that. And the player would have to dodge his way through the ongoing beam, take out maybe a few generators that are keeping a shield up infront of the scarab (maybe like in HW's, it's under construction) or something and once you take out the shield you can fire at the scarab.

maybe instead of under construction, its legs have just been blown apart, and there are scorpion remains littered around the location.

No but seriously I'm sure with the quality of cutscenes you've made in the past you could pull off a great looking scene where the scarab gets partially destroyed (of course it would be a lot cooler if the player got to destroy it ;D)
