I think I can do this in a few words.

Sounds to me like opinions are just that.

I bet 90 percent of you listen to Gaga/Kanye/Bieber and the rest of the gang.

I'm going to give you some personal criticism if you do:

You have bad taste.

I will not accept opinions from people with obviously bad taste, jaded opinions and invalid critiques. It'd be like me, as a guitar player, having some piece of filth tell me to play a 4 chord song, because those sell money and are popular.

Artistic style or colour or premise is of no concern to you. Criticisms regarding 3D art are supposed to fall within build quality itself. Artistic direction is all a matter of perspective. You can voice it sure, but in this age of this particular community, all it does is waste time and we need to get things moving now.

This is how it works:

Me make something, we ask people who know what the F they're talking about.

We post the thing on community forums to you know....let people know things are happening and give some insight on where things are headed and or just to plain share something we think is cool.

Some clown on some forum thinks he has input on my creative process? Pfft. Yeah, the last thing I need after being at work all day dealing with clients and their feedback, is coming home working on something till 3 in the morning and some candyass telling me how to do my hobby with his broken feedback.

The problem is, this invalid "every voice shall be heard" criticism way of thinking is what broke the modding scene in this community. Now everything has to conform to this ideal mindset and fall within some invisible bracket no one can see or follow, and progress doesn't happen. People spend too long on a project and it falls apart.

This doesn't happen in other modding communities, who also, seem to produce better more consistent work. All your "criticisms" are, are reflecting ideologies 90 percent of the time and hold no weight what so ever.

This too fat, this too thin, this not bassey enough, needs more cowbell. It will never end. You look for some sort of "problem" as if it's always there and exists and you must find it. "Oh this thing here, I have to find something to pick apart, this must be it here, I dunno derp"

We stare at this stuff for hours on end as we make it. After a certain point you need to realize all of it is intended and we know about it.

In the case of my current work:

Yes there are flaws, some areas painted quicker than others, some parts that aren't as special, but I am well aware of them, and none of you brought them up. You didn't bring up valid criticism. You brought up "design choices" which, in my opinion, you have no real call to make.

Personally my current way of doings things, is I try to get out my stuff in less than 5 nights (I have lazy days to you know, have a break in between those) so I'm not spending too long on one thing.
Years ago I'd spend weeks or even longer making one thing, only for it to be bad anyway in the long run just because I wasn't as good at the time as I am now.
In the last month or so I've knocked out a whole bunch of stuff, and it's much better this way. Everything get's polished later, but what's posted is what it will look like, minus some tweaks and more time spent on painting. The important part is that things get done, and stay fresh. I don't want to be staring at the same thing for all that time again to get sick of it and lose flair and then have some grubby people spitting all over it.

People accept criticism and take it on the skin of their teeth, but I feel deep down it's the reason many have moved on from this community. After a point it just becomes frustrating to never just being able to be happy with something you just wasted weeks of your life on.

So I knock it out and give it as much attention as I can within a timeframe and then I move onto the next. If somethings taking longer than expected, I take a breather from that particular piece, get back to life, distract myself, come back, knock something else out, and then return to the piece again with fresh eyes.

Every artist strives to make the best he can at that present time, but there are boundaries to this so called feedback you think your giving.

All this stuff we post is PR to basically say "were still here". How I'd wish Black Mesa Source would post some damn proper updates.

This forum is nothing but a wailing wall and the mantra that goes on along with it is half the reason the community is so fragmented. Modacity is no different.

I also know for a fact that this is ALL Tall Poppy syndrome. I can bet good money on a resident well liked halomaps guy posting these same images getting blown and jizzed all over like a shemale train in thailand.

I don't really know what to say anymore. There it is. Feel glad, It's 3:20 in the morning and I just became a sucker, yet again. This will be the last time I post here at least until things improve, because I won't put up with this.

look

look here's a thing

they're rigged and I tried to make their necks and hairs longer guys [within the aforementioned animation and collision constraints]; also higuy I dimmed the reflections.

sniper helmet is untextured wip; lensflare was placed using guerilla because I was too lazy to do it in the model for an unfinished perm.

majors will have their helmet but again, lazy.

Sniper jackal is fantastic.
You really should try out for 343 industries lag!

Edit: don't rage about this, but I find the purple light is a bit too bright. I understand it's part of the jackals marksman system + a visual clue to the player that a sniper is in the area, but it just is really bright atm. I'd tone it down a tad.

Looking great! How much danger will a Carbine Jackal be to the player?

Also, Lag, I figured out why it's so odd making H2 Elite animations; the Halo 1 bones don't include foot and shoulder nodes where the H2 bones do. Of course, this is just through observation, so correct me if I'm wrong.

H1's Elites have both feet bones (bip01 l foot/r foot) and "shoulders" (bip01 l clavicle/r clavicle). IIRC the only things H2's Elites have bone-wise that H1 doesn't are facial animation stuff and fingers.

To answer your previous question more seriously: we're not looking to deviate too much from what you'd expect from a Jackal with a Carbine. Somewhere in the range of "reasonably balanced" is where we're trying to put them.

DOH! I meant they lack toe bones. If you watch Elites move in H2 and H3 (especially in Reach), they have significant use of the toes in how they move. Until I get back home in December, where I'll have access to Theatre mode, my anims will probably continue to lack SOMETHING of importance.

And thanks for mentioning that Clavicle! Looks like I have been blind-sighted in my workings with the anims. This will definitely help make the upper body look less stiff and more fluid.

You didn't actually give a valid reason why other people cannot give their opinion on pictures you post of your work.

Why would a professional artist need crit from a bunch of amateurs? This goes for both Dano and Neuro. To sum it up, NOBODY here is in a position to offer crit on ANY work that gets posted here. In any artistic profession, the notion that a professional would get any form of advice from an amateur aspiring in the same field has always been ludicrous. Do professional chef's get advice from frycooks at Mcdonalds? Same. Thing.

Get that in your thick skull.

Why would a professional artist not act professional to any criticism, even if it came from a amateur? You want to be professional and popular within your community, right?

Not only this, there is actually some decent people here that aren't drama queens like half the people located over on modacity.net.

Get off your high horse, and stick it into your goddamned thick skull.

For the love of God, can you all please shut up? We finally had a new page where that BS from before wasn't present and then the snide members of this website had to bring it back. Cool, you're skilled, that's awesome, but seriously leave your crap elsewhere. One reason why the PM system was designed was so arguments could be diffused and not stomp up threads.

This type of behavior may be acceptable at Modacity, but it isn't welcome here.

Grow up everyone. At last people here get self taught and have more merit than those frustrated/bad rated at school modelers.

I actually hope this thread gets locked so I don't have to read any more posts from those "professional" artists.

What the hell gives any of you the right to decide who's an amateur or a professional, who's opinion is valid and who's is not. Professional, no matter what anyone says, is just a title. DEAL WITH IT. You're not better than anyone else no matter what you say or do in this world, so get your head out of your ass and deal with it. Point is, all men in this world are equal. Opinions are the only thing that fills in what human society believes is better or worse. You think you're a professional? Prove it. up to now I've seen nothing more than narcissistic dicks posting about how better they are than the "lowly commoner trash" of the halomaps forum. If that's how you think life works, then I pity you. Grow up.

I honestly hate cmt now for allowing such jerks to work on their team, so screw this thread, and screw your campaign mod. I'm not reading any more posts by these jerks.

To be entirely honest, I have no affiliation with this guy, but I sincerely agree with him. I have an outstanding faith in him. Like a Christian to the Bible. Even though there maybe some fallacies, like his join up date, but I'll stick through with his original thought and meaning.

If he was a private company, I would actually approve of him and I'm a Communist.

On to the topic of CMT:

Are you guys going to use brutes a lot? I don't remember it being said anywhere. Also you you going to still have a Splazah? Just wondering.

We've been trying a lot of things with the Brutes this time around. As of now the idea is that you engage in combat with an Elite 3 times: once when you find it, once when you try to kill it, and then again when it's weak. As a result we've been playing with a 3:1 ratio of Brutes to Elites for each encounter. Encounters are being redone so for areas we deem appropriate, there will be 3 Brutes for every Elite in the squad that would have otherwise spawned. The Brutes are much easier to fight one on one than the elites, but they make up for it in their numbers. Except in areas where we deem Elites to be the prefered enemy, you will have a 50% chance of encountering Brutes instead, although we can scale an area to be more partial to one enemy or another. So far this has worked really well. It brings a new level of unpredictability to old areas, and with all the classes of brutes (spiker, bpr, bruteshot, needler) and elites (carbine, pr, needler, pp) we have that can sometimes spawn in an encounter there are probably around 6 or 7 ways your encounters can change through each play through.

As for the laser we haven't decided anything yet. It's not important to what we're doing with a50, so we'll have a discussion about it at a later time.

also not that anyone will listen but people who are "giving crit" please TRY to be civilized. please?
you know inserting attitude with your crit will return more attitude and be meaningless. stop craving that. please. if someone disagrees with your OPINION, (because yes thats what it is) that is that. they have disagreed and everyone knows damn well that little to no CONSTRUCTIVE criticism was given. please for the sake of everyone try and be mature. if some start others will follow. so i am starting, i did not denounce any one individual but you know who you are, try and keep it relevant and nice. please. again im just asking this of you, i realize i have no place to do so.

A quadruple plus to this man. No matter what an artist or rampaging homosexual is, he is still an artist or rampaging homosexual.
You can say his art is nice, or his sex with other men is a delicacy, but at the end of it the artist is going to be criticized and the rampaging homosexual is still a homosexual.

Sounds pretty good to me. Adding variety to encounters that the players will have played countless times is always good.

Simple question in an attempt to get back on-topic. Will Brutes have a stronger melee than elites? And will they berserk for longer?

you know inserting attitude with your crit will return more attitude and be meaningless. stop craving that. please. if someone disagrees with your OPINION, (because yes thats what it is) that is that. they have disagreed and everyone knows damn well that little to no CONSTRUCTIVE criticism was given. please for the sake of everyone try and be mature. if some start others will follow. so i am starting, i did not denounce any one individual but you know who you are, try and keep it relevant and nice. please. again im just asking this of you, i realize i have no place to do so.

please.

I believe it's an overcharge from an offscreen charged PP to show off their normals.

Well, just went back and read the previous page...
Just wanna say that the jackals look great, better than halo 2 (even on xbox).
Lodex said something about the purple light being too 'bright', and I agree. Either too bright or the flare is too big... it's a little overwhelming. Of course you did it on purpose, probably to make him easier to see or something like that, which is a cool idea that hasn't been done before... but I'm not too sure I like it. Maybe you could make his head visible by, say, adding glowing outlines over the contours of the helmet, kind of like neon stripes.
Edit: I also agree with dano about the whole community crit thing, he basically explained my whole viewpoint about these forums.

Drama? Why was I not invited?

Considering we can not discuss or crit any of the work you guys have posted, I shall instead crit your members.

Dano, you are sat very comfortably on your peddle stool, perched nicely with a set of binoculars. Want to know why I currently despise you?

Sure you have a great skill set, and no one here will argue your capabilities. What gets me is your anal attitude. Who helped you along the way when you were learning? Who did you ask for crit from years ago? US, the Halo community. We were your standing leg, we were your answer for guidance - never forget that, never forget your roots.

A lot of people here dislike the way I post, I come across arrogant - you know what. I was arrogant 6 years ago and I'm arrogant now. I never changed, I stood true to my values. You on the other hand turned into some self-rightous thick minded individual who has cocooned yourself in your 'professional' bubble.

You may be happy with that - no one else is my seldom friend.
