Wrath, you will find hanful of tutorials on this site in the tutorials section.
First, you'll need a set of tools
3dsMax8, 9 or lower ( personal preference) OR Gmax
+ HEK ( Halo editing Kit)
Then I suggest you watch H Guru's Making a map tutorial. it's well done, accurate and easy to follow.

Self teaching is the best way ever. Use gbxmodel importers and other stuff to learn on your won, try to find sources here and there and you are done.

Yes, tutorials are a good way to learn but learning a few ropes from an experienced person is just fine! There is no need to snap at him to "GET A TUTORIAL OMGGGGGGG"
Personally, it is better to learn from your own experimentation, but getting help from others is pretty much a necessity.

I taught myself a great deal of the basics of mapping, texturing, modding, and scripting, but I also need help every once in a while for the more complicated stuff. It's fine if he wants to be tutored, as long as it's not about the core basics.

Because there isn't much to criticize, criticism comes once you have an idea of what you are doing, and can make a coherent animation. One people can tell what it is by looking at it, and that does not need an explanation as to what it is. For example, you said yours was him whacking someone and then firing once, and I still can't figure out what part is supposed to be the melee, I figured it must be the part where he moves the gun from left to right, but that looks nothing like a melee.
So, in conlusion, there's not much we can help you on. Your animation was probably about 4 keyframes (beginning, after moving from left to right, after firing, end). Sorry to come off sounding so rude and harsh, but all the advice we can give you right now is to watch tutorials and look at other animations. The way I learned was by looking at animations from different games and trying to copy them to the best of my abilities. I was terrible at first, but you'll improve fast, and you'll get a feel for how weapons act (ie. how the gun should jerk up a bit when you insert the magazine, or how it should be pushed forward when you flick the charging handle).

as i said, its going to fast. i cant help that my gif maker has the urge to speed things up three times.
FYI, its one shot THEN melee. XD
a question, say your moving the gun with impacts, like when the gun jerks up when you slam the clip in, how should i do the keyframing there?
