Optimize means to remove unnecessary polygons, fix any open edges, something along those lines.

Pretty much.

All those polygons on the flat surfaces are absolutely unnecessary, and you won't have to think twice about removing them. For example, those horrible square polygons on the handle can go.

To remove those polygons, don't just simply press a poly and hit delete. That would be bad. You need to go into the edge mode in the Edit Poly, click on an edge, and press the remove button.

quick tut for you:




Lol wrong, the vertices are still there, so that means the faces will still be drawn, you just dont get the edge view of it in 3ds max.

If its a flat plane, and there are 8 polys on it. Then just select the faces/polys and delete them. Then just cap it together using the border tool in Editable Poly. Or remove vertices from that plane, so that no verts exist inside of the 4 sided poly.

weld the verts on the inside of the red button (where you dont see it), so that the 2 edges combine into 1 vert.

the way I showed is the way i learned it, and I like that way and it works, unless gmax doesn't do it the way 3ds max does.
