Okay so this is kinda just the ground and I through things into the map for kinda references well there is one problem I don't know how big I can go without it doing the weird flicker thing (where the map has spots that disappear the further you are from them.) But I would like to get this ship in there

Oh and I followed one of the basic mapping tutorials to get started I'll post the link when I find it but the dimensions of the beginning box was X = 50000 Y = 50000 Z = 50000

now I don't know if that's way to big or not I'll let you guys figure that out.

Here is that Tutorial that I started off my map with.http://hce.halomaps.org/index.cfm?fid=2469

Thank you again vick jr I got that tutorial also I think I Tessellated 4 times I think i may have to do more for it to work with a map this size, and that model was just a pack i found ill get the model link to you if i can find it again to upload pictures there is a little icon by the hyper link icon (the sphere/earth with a chain link) its the one right next to it on the right

Disaster if you mean that arrow pointing saying city if it's going to be molded into the city don't worry its not it's just to reference size, the map making tutorial said use a box then extend it the size of your map flip then hide the top and the sides and that's where I went from there

and I know the terrain might not realistic I'm still working around making it look nice this was all done within like two days.

Here is the link with that ship model in it http://hce.halomaps.org/index.cfm?fid=1589

IMPORTANT: I guess you could say this is important, my map all my models and tags that were going to be featured in this map were deleted, that was all my fault because I'm an idiot and didn't pay attention to what actually happen, oh well it is a long story.

I re-started the map with the same dimensions and I also use that link Vick JR gave me for displacement, I can almost guarantee it will look 100% better than this and the ship had to be re downloaded and re-made but that also looks a lot better.

The whole map overall after being re-made from the ground up (which it wasn't that far off the ground to begin with) looks a lot better than these pictures. I will make a new post with what I currently have.

Please don't model from boxes.
Also your terrain doesn't even look natural.

I thought i gave you a tutorial on displacement. That really helps. Search "displacement tutorial". Then, use soft selection for more detail. Displacement requires a lot of triangles to work with, so i usually tessellate the bottom 5 times. For soft selection, go to vertex mode, check the check box "use soft selection", then click on a vertex, then increase the falloff until it has the vert around it in different colors, the drag the center vert up and it creates a hill. mess around with the soft selection settings for different effects.

As for the map, my 3ds didn't start glitching up until I'd tesselated 5 or 6 times, but i don't recommend that, because tool took along time, radiosity takes a very long time, and even bluestreak ran out of "script memory", which i think is the ram it uses. How big, in size (not poly count), your map is shouldn't affect 3ds max that much, at least it doesn't for me, but i can see why you were asking for reference models.

It looks like a cool map so far. Very big. I hope it'l have vehicles. Just needs a bit more detail and better terrain. I like the ship in the sky. Is that the Dawn?

P.S. I'm a noob to this site and it's workings. how do you upload images?

is there a dawn ship model and textures on the internet?
ide really like that model or can somone send it to me. and i can get the bitmaps.

and the map looks good, as long as it has vehicles..and weapons lots of weapons..not like a "INSANE" map

well, it seems a bit... plain. try adding some underground or architectural structures. learning how to use arrays in map designs might help alot. and the mountains are laking realistic curves, there a bit pointy.

My only advise for a good and successful map is to spend time on it. good luck.
