Well I'm just getting myself familiar with 3DS max and moving and deforming shapes and all that. Like I said I'm very new at it:)

No smartass, it's a robot that was made by a person with parkinsons disease(me) I know I'm not good at it. So cut me some slack:) It still needs arms, stomach, waist, legs and some other dodads.

try making maps before trying to model other stuff
makign maps is the easiest way to learn the tools then try to (plane) model other stuff

box modeling is the msot simple form of modeling yeah
but with plane modeling you can create better looking maps
and i think it is easier that way caus when you model with a box you cant make ground, cliffs ect as good caus it will produce errors

How is planer modeling anymore complex than box modeling? (Make plane, Shift+Drag!) It comes down to what people are comfortable with, don't discriminate because you don't like to use the form of modeling.
Haha I say that but I kick the asses of people that use spline modeling! Weirdos!

........
the principal is the same
but plane modeling gives more freedom because with box modeling you most of the time keep the same shape as the box you made

That's one way to look at it, I personally like to employ both forms of modeling. Starting out with box modeling to get the generic forms in and then modify them how ever I need. When it comes to character modeling though, the way I learned is a mix of spline and planer.

Spline modeling is modeling using splines (DUH), haha
My last statement was retarded so let me fix this with an example. Say you wanted to create a handgun, one way to go about it would be to create a spline and trace the layout of the gun. Then convert it to Editable Poly (Mesh what ever you prefer) and extrude the faces, from there it becomes a bit like box modeling. This is a technique used for wine glass, and table legs, the use of the lathe modifier makes ideal for creating objects like those. But I have seen people create some insane things with splines, like tanks and houses. It's all a matter of preference.

BTW Guilty Spark, good job! I remember when I started modeling, I was incredible at creating spheres. I won't post any of them because I don't want you guys to hate me for my amazing skills! LMAO They were so round!

yeah maybe ur right
BUT makign a map is the fastest way to learn all the tools
and when you dont know hwo to use the tools most fo the time starting with a map tutorial for beginners is the easiest way to learn them
i dotn say make a map then release it
but when you know all the tools then go try to model a weapon

The easiest way to learn the tools is to watch various tutorials on the internet, not just halo CE related tutorials. go to tutorialized.com and view tutorials there. They have a lot of tutorials that will teach you how to make various objects and will show you what the tools do and how they can be used.

yeah ur right XD

once your good enough with modeling a map i suggest trying to learn
how to make a map op paper before making it in 3ds max
you know:
maplay out
sketches of inportant parts of maps
ect

dont have to be smexy profesional quality and stuff
but at a level that YOU can put an paper what you want with a map

do not bash any form of modeling. i use a healthy mix of plane, box, and spline modeling.
i refer you to this:
http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s277/TheKillerDonut/models/ma5c.jpg
roughly 3200 triangles, mostly box modeled.

i personally would not recommend vertex modeling, if by vertex modeling you mean you place vertices and create faces
to me, and this is PURELY my opinion, its quite tedious.

I just use whatever technique i need to get the look i want, using certain tools to create a detail or shape. like donut said, i use a healthy "mix." I think for certain things one type of modeling is more appropriate. Vertex modeling to me seems to be very tedious and sloppy, but can be useful sometimes.

Keep it up, and try to stay away from jamming primitives together.. watch a plane modeling tutorial.

Weapon Modeling Tip: When you go to model the handle and ends, like the barrel/flashlight, use the preset cylinder or tube options for the end items and the box for the handle. However, make sure you make the size and lengths for the items just right, or it will suck badly. Anyways, I can't see the pics, but from what I hear you are getting the hang of modeling. Glad to hear it.
