What if we have the desire to break the protective covering of protected files? What would it take to crack the seals?

Major C++ scripting and such, and u could reverse the same process HEK+ uses to protect map and make it unprotect without a password

I tried to use a map converter, but it said, and I quote, "Reaaaallllllllllllllllllly screwy error."

All I have to do is convert it to MAP and it works.

Unfortunately, some of us are not modelers and lack the time to make a descent model AND anims for weapons at the same time. Plus, this is CMT work I am trying to extract, so I, like I have asked before, Masters is making new tags and I want to extract the old MA5K. I have "plans" for it.

did you read this as you typed it? you want to break encryption to get a model becuase you cant make your own. thats why i learned how to model. it took me 2 years to get where i am now, and i still cant be considered "good." modeling takes time. whoever made cmt's ma5k had to master modeling, and they dont want the general public to have it now. so if you want one, make it yourself, or ask masters for it. if he wants you to have it, hell give it to you. masters giving out old cmt tags is not unheard of
edit: this is a suggestion, not a massive criticism.

Well, I have a few ideas to simulate the Ma5k.

Greatest to the least:

-Single shots in AR or BR.

-Give the turret projectile tag to a Battle Rifle.

-Find a BR model and rip of the scope in Gmax.

-Wait for CMT to give a grand collection of tags, IF it ever happens.

I am a little confused though. Modeling takes years, right? Then why are there at least 5 members who couldn't recently model now modeling at least descently? I may just be model incapable, or maybe I could start tomorrow......

Masterz is pretty giving with older tags. and frankly, making a thread about this here will get you a lot of flames and one derailed topic of angry, internet-geek debate, and eventually one declarative post by dennis stating why protecting maps is ridiculous because bungie owns our tags anyways, which may or may not be followed by a locking of the thread. I shall now help myself to the big red X in the upper right hand corner of my screen, because I don't care to stick around and see how this turns out. Hurr.

im just saying, iv been modeling for 2 years. im sure within a month, maybe even a week you can get a basic feel for things. a tip: learn your tools. know what each tool does, and what you use it for.

Yeah, right now I am tinkering with crosswodding weapons with other compatible weapons, so I should be fine until I get board of that, especially when my first SP is complete. Status on SP Crossmod: 50%.

Then I help you with your own SP problems.
Now you want to rip our content?

Yeah, you can forget about me or anyone on else on CMT giving you tags or a second chance (again).

The CE community is doing better than ever actually. There's about 400 people playing 1.00, and then 300 people on 1.07

I've been aroun since the game came out, and the only time there were numbers close to that was when h2ce released on bungie.net.

So no, the game isn't dieing.

You could try asking Masters about using some of our tags.

Why do you think we protect our work in the first place? Any idea? Any consideration of how we would feel if someone was ripping our incomplete content without permission?

You complain that you cannot model, but you have never tried?

Also, CMT is leaving after SPv2. We could carry on their weapons and other tags in future maps.

If you noticed, we are still here, and our tags aren't even finished! Your rationalization isn't valid (and it's still just a rationalization). This is simply disrepectful. Sorry (not really), but I'm with Masters on this. You've lost my respect.

a while back, before this wild map protection craze, the community was booming.

Honestly, the last time that I could describe the community as "booming" was before it was possible to rip content from other maps.

Quote: --- Original message by: ColdFire
now, all the "good" maps are being protected.

Well, if you want to use someone's work, or even if you just want someone's help, you could always ask.

it doesnt work, the only reason i kept it is because it was going extinct at the speed of light and its a part of ripping history i have a duty to keep it. lol i said duty

God I hate threads like this. Protect the maps. What the hell is this a kindergarden school yard with kids screaming MINE MINE MINE you can't have it! It's MINE!

Who cares if someone uses the tags or assets you create? Why wouldn't you want someone else to use them? Why not help others create other maps using stuff you made? It's not like you have any monetary benefits from making a tag for the game. You can't sell it, you can't copyright it, you can't even own it. So why not share it. You will still have bragging rights to it's creation regardles of who else uses it. And that's want you want anyway isn't it?

This is my message to all you children who want to protect your maps: If you want them protected so bad then don't make them. Grow up and join a real community, one that shares ideas and helps other members. This whole concept of protecting maps in a free game is ridiculous, childish and harmful to the game’s community. Halo CE didn’t really take off until the tags to the maps were freely available and nearly 4 years later I still see this crap about “protecting my map”. God I hate threads like this. - Dennis

You know, one of the reasons that CMT protects its content is because it is unfinished and we're still working on it. Do you want to use some of our tags? You could at least have the patience to wait until we've finished them, and the courtesy to ask us for them in the meantime.

What surprises me is how you keep using hte same argument, without even adressing what epople hav said to you time over time.

We release tags or give them to people when they ask for them, as long as they deserve them. We're not a bunc of kids yelling "It's Mine" We're a bunch of kids who will help and give you tags and help if you ask us nicely and give us a good reason why you deserve it.

Our weapons were never designed to be plopped into a map, every weapon has been edited to suit their needs in our mod. You are just asking fo ra weapon because it looks cool, not because it fills a void in gameplay.

You use Dennis's argument that we should all be sharing, and in a MATURE community, we would. But he also has made it clear that he would like to see more maps with actual gameplay, rather than just tons of guns and novelty weapons. If we had unprotected maps, what do you think would happen? How any maps whore the hugeass\coldsnap tags and knaves H2 tags, or even old H2CMT tags?

Hey, I have given up on ripping content now. I don't really care to rip your weapons nor other content. I am going to model my own stuff. I think I would like the pride of creating instead of stealing. Sorry if you thought wrongly. I have had to do multiple other things before I could get back to post again. Once again, I am sorry for any misconceptions you all have had. Dennis should lock this thread. It serves no purpose anymore. Sorry for the firefight everyone.

I support open source. First, I'd like to point out that the argument of being "unable to relate to having great work to protect" due to the fact that I've never released any content is pointless in my case. Even if I had made many great maps or tags, I would leave them all unprotected. Why? It's very simple. Open source gives people the ability to learn from other people's work in the best way possible. I would have learned next to nothing about tags if I had not been given the opportunity to rip them and see how they work. In fact, I learned the majority of what I know from ripped tags, not from tutorials.

However, I respect the other side's opinion. The opposing argument, which is also valid, is that open source can be exploited by lazy people to put other's tags in maps or even, in the worst cases, to take credit for these tags. I understand how this would make the creator feel abused, yet I wouldn't feel that way. Why? Honestly, I wouldn't care. So what if they took the tags? Chances are those tags were shoved into a worthless mod that will get about as many downloads as the number of strings on a guitar. The fact is, YOU know that the work is yours, and there is more than enough proof available from the map you made that was ripped that the tags are YOURS. As a result, the creator of that mod who just jammed your tags just looks like an idiot.

But, this is where my argument against the opposing side becomes difficult. What if somebody not only took credit for your tags, but used them in an actually very good map that became popular? In that case, it's much more difficult to remain calm and ignore it, because someone else's great work is thanks to their stealing of your great work. I admit that this is definitely the flaw in open source.

But that's just the thing. That is the flaw of open source. There's a good and a bad side to protection and open source. It comes down to this:

Protecting maps: Sure, nobody will take your content, and you've got nothing to worry about. However, you also take away the ability for people to learn from your work.

Unprotected maps: There's the risk of your work being stolen and possibly being used in an actually good map. Yet, you give people the opportunity to learn many things from your map's tags.

Why do I support open source then? The final reason is this: I don't care if somebody uses my tags for selfish and stupid reasons, as long as I know that I am giving people the opportunity to learn something from my tags to further benefit the community overall.

Darkhalo.. if you really wanted the tags, you could have asked.. but by this sad attempt to take them without permision.. just epic phail. Id suggest you get a new username.. I dont think many people will even talk to you anymore, cause the only person who suports you is hogdriver, and hes the one person you dont want suporting you.

You claimed you where gonna ask masterz afterwards.. why not ask first?.. cause wouldnt it be easier asking before doing the work?.. and he could have also could have saved you from making this stupid thread, because if you did get permision, he would have just given them to you.

The reason people put protection on is for a reason; its not their way of challenging you to bypass it, its them locking it up, and you wouldnt go break into someones house to go steal their stuff, would you?..

*Sigh* I have made a terrible mistake, and for that I feel horrible. I thought ripping content was just a normal thing, like people do it a lot of the time. I now understand that it is not. I am going to apologize deeply again, not because I want to get on someone's good side, but because I was being helped by someone who postitively supported me and now I broke their trust. I feel downright aweful, I can't express that enough. I make mistakes a ton and a lot of them are off the spur of the moment or I don't know enough to know they would be mistakes. I am getting ahead of myself in everything, while I should just take things one at a time. I'm sorry people, I truly am.

Quoted for perfect quote
