I would like to believe those were what they call in the books "vitrified soil" or ultra-heated earth caused by plasma attacks (from past encounters).

Quote: Work in progress mate. Probably not finished, the beta build sign is there for a reason. Yea, I wish i could just delete this post, It was a bit impulsive. Obviously the CMT is on it. I'm sure it has something to do with the fact you can only cram so much stuff in a halo map. I'm betting the extra rocks are an idea they're playing around with but until they get all the top priority stuff done they wont fully develop them because they may have to remove them so save space later. Or they just simply haven't gotten to it yet. Anyway I could have thought about it a bit longer and answered my own question with common sense.

So... I noticed in the PAX trailer the chief was the biped from SPV2, whereas before in the A10 playthough it was the same biped as the one used in Evolved previously. Was kind of wondering which biped was gonna be used for the SPV3 final? Edited by Spartan314 on Aug 4, 2015 at 10:04 AM

Modified spv2. The evolved one doesn't really work well when it is up close to the camera, nor does it really fit in with our art direction.

Everyone loves it, especially the people who worked on H1. Had lots of good discussions with them and they like the mindset and ideas behind it. Current Bungie and 343 devs are also quite supportive in the same way. I won't mention any names, as it could be problematic for some, but it was a way cool experience. It's not something I really showed them since it doesn't have much to do with H1, and the whole focus of SPV3 is to do an evolution of H1. Some people played TSC:E at the RUL Party but it has a rather poor retention rate, due to confusing level design, and the fact there is no nostalgia factor or familiarity to rope people in. TSC:E as a level doesn't really appeal to anything anyone wanted or needed per say in my opinion. The general masses don't really care about their favorite level being redesigned and rather see the things they love iterated on and improved.
POA was the most played level out of all of everything we brought. People loved being introduced to our changes slowly throughout the level, interacting with low gravity, the turret controls, terminals, exploring the new levels and seeing the changes to the enemy sets. One of the Bungie guys lost it the minute he picked up a hunter gun and turned it on it's buddy. It was pretty cool for him to pick it up, charge it, and exclaim "That's f***ing cool" with a huge grin on his face.
What the 343 and Bungie guys really liked was that we took all those things that were great about H1 and later games, and went and iterated and improved on it. Seeing the story from multiple perspectives via terminal, the ideas behind the weapon set and the way to chose to design and allocate our sandbox for maximum variation through the course of a 14 mission game, and iterating and improving on their existing ideas seemed to really strike home with them.
When H2 was being designed, there was a huge whiteboard with things listed into 3 categories, Things people liked about h1, things they didn't like, and things we want to add. They then proceeded to look at the things that people didn't like, and look for fixes to them and ways to improve it... even though there were those who were looking at this white board and wanting to further develop the things that people did like. That's what we are doing. In a way, we are taking the opposite road of what they did with H2, and I think that's what gets them excited.

Quote: --- Original message by: Halonimator but ,why the animations lookx smoother ? Because the animations are synced to the overall framerate. They're not actually any smoother, it's just that their jerkiness is masked by the overall framerate being consistent. You don't even have to use console commands to set Halo to run like this, all you have to do is set your framerate to 30fps in the graphics options menu. Depending on how you like things set up, this actually looks pretty good, especially when combined with OpenSauce's motion blur. But yes, point is, this isn't something that needs to be built-in to SPv3, as it's already available as a default option.

Dalode will say whatever he thinks will create the most drama.
I judge graphics by how effectively they achieve the creators goal. H5 has fantastic graphics, everything they set out to do is done phenomenally. But do I like the style of the art... no. Does Alien Colonial Marines have good graphics... they try to set up this creepy Cameron esque look and it falls flat on it's face because nothing is executed right, despite having some pretty cool assets. For many, Zelda Wind Waker has crappy graphics because it looks cartoony and they expected a more realistic game, but it sets out all it needs to do.
Gears of War is a great example of the two working in perfect tandem. The graphics set the mood, the atmosphere, and a sense of grittyness and realism that the gameplay reflects. That new game Cuphead is also pretty cool, as it's 1960s aged cartoon and general sillyness hits all the notes they wanted to hit.

That's what I was getting at, Wind Waker is a great looking game but because it does not "fit" what people expected "good graphics" to be at the time it gets slammed. Now I think people look at it pretty favorably, but back when it came out people hated on it hard core.

People expected stylized graphics, it's freaking zelda. And yes Wind Waker really pulled it off correctly. I doubt that there is a sheer majority that says Wind Waker has bad graphics.

If we're veering into off-topic and talking about aesthetics in games, I gotta mention Fez. A lot of people just dismiss its style for being 'retro', but there is so much attention to detail in that game. All the incidental creatures and little flourishes aside, most of the game's narrative is literally inscribed on the walls. That, and Rich Vreeland's superb soundtrack combine to make something that fills me with a bit too much joy every time I play it.
