The one massive thing PC gaming has over consoles is modding communities like this.

And if they did?

That would make things easier for those who have some serious difficulty adjusting to a controller.

They actually have some 3rd Party Adapters for Mouse and Keyboards for the consoles. You just have to find them is all. And pay for them.

Quote: It lacks a LOT of things, games

PC still has a larger library than all the consoles combined and that's not counting emulation.
Yet there are still a load of games on Consoles exclusive to consoles that people buy consoles for. Just like people buying PCs for certain PC games.
Quote: but often a PC game has to deal with a wider array of issues than any two console games

Most of the issues on a PC game is user error that are easily solved by googling.
Then you obviously don't play Bethesda games. That's just one example too. And while this statement is true, for people who aren't good with computers it's still rocket science.
Quote: Consoles are cool because they are alternatives for gaming that offer dedicated GPU only for limited function so that a game can run at its smoothest FPS.

That's funny because I have 2006 PC sitting around somewhere that can run today's games at a higher visual fidelity than console games.
This was a general statement that pertains to all consoles. Also, most consoles are running on PC tech from 2005. I'd hope a high-end PC from 2006 could run most of the stuff consoles can pretty well. The fact that a PC out-performs a console is nothing new. Consoles just deliver a higher FPS on a consistent basis than an average PC.
Quote: bought cheaper for what they are,

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GkwOnjq9ChU
That's cool. For what their functions are, consoles are still more cost effective at $200-$300. And actually from a price point his machine was $310+. Skyrim also doesn't take a lot to run compared to some other games out there.
Quote: and aren't as complex in comparison to PCs in the gaming department.

Then you haven't read what developers said about N64 and the PS3.
Then you didn't think I was talking about the average joe using the machine. Not all people know how to use a PC to its optimal functions. That's really one of the big bonuses to the consoles for people who just want to game and don't want to deal with PC things in the same process.
Edited by CaptainVidya on Jun 29, 2012 at 02:02 AM

I have no intention of this being a Console vs. PC debate, so if you want to continue this do it over the PM system. I am currently a big PC gamer playing PC-only games right now, so I'm not really biased towards either side.

That's a pretty good job so far. I Think it would look cool if you styled the stock, magazine, grip, and trigger guard like the AUG in Battlefield 3: http://images4.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20120605004414/battlefield/images/1/12/AUG_A3.png
Also, I think you should move the foregrip back a bit, then add a vertical one.

For this weapon do some silhouette studies you want to build out the entire weapon than begin working with details.

It seems overly bulky, especially with that... thingy protruding from the front. It just looks like it has a bunch of wasted space, although I hope you don't take that in a bad way.

Take the Kel-Tec KSG for example. Sleek, compact, bullpup, and every part has a discernible purpose. Try using real-world weaponry as a reference point.

I just see a big blob, there is no design to it, just a typical "gun shape" (handle, stock, barrel)

Yeah dude, you have a pretty generic silhouette of a gun, but there's no real design going on there. I see a few insets near the back but overall your design is pretty basic. Real world guns aren't just boxy shapes with barrels, a lot of them are actually quite cylindrical (m16, mp5k, etc). Also, most modern shotguns have that thing you pull back to load a new shell (i am an expert on guns as you can see) so if you want it to be obviously a shotgun, you could think about incorporating some kind of mechanism like that. It doesn't have to be a U shaped thing that you pull back, it could be a foregrip or something. It could be on the top, or the side (like that japanese SMG from WaW), I once designed one where you rotated a foregrip 90* to load a new shell. So yeah, you could try incorporating design elements from existing weapons without copying and that might help.

Honestly I would go back to the drawing board, look at real world shotguns, and try to design a silhouette that is more interesting. Draw it out on paper, then scan it in (or do it how I used to do it; take a picture of your drawing on your phone and then send a picture message to your email, (works for me with Verizon and Yahoo), then you can make a plane in max, make the dimensions your picture's resolution, and then apply the picture to the plane and use it as a reference to model from.

If you're intent on keeping this design, here's what I have to say about it: Having the handle so far forward looks like it would make the gun awkward to hold, especially with the recoil of a shotgun. I know it's bullpup, so maybe you could move the handle back and use it as a guide to insert the clip. Alternatively you could extend the barrel (or see below) to rebalance it. I would also exaggerate the curve of the stock near the end, although that's just me. Your faces don't look planar either, like you accidentally soft selected some vertices here and there, unless you were going for that look? Dunno, it's hard to tell with the lighting. Also, just doing a google for the most generic shotguns (spas 12, m1014, etc) they all have really long barrels. Yours is extremely short (or at least appears so). If you make the body of the gun more cylindrical, it will make the barrel appear longer and will also make your body less boxy! I would make the handguard(?) in front of the handle thinner, or at least make it thin then fan out near the handle. It looks unwieldy right now.

A general rule I go by, is if you have to point out what it is, you didn't do a great job designing it. Without your edit I would have never known this was a shotgun. tbqh it looks more like a generic "space marine" rifle.

Like I said my model is W.I.P. and I posted it here for advice. As I am actually designing this for some I do have some basic rules I must follow. Bull-pup, Semi-automatic, box magazine, 8 round mag, short barrel and a few other details. I didn't really notice that the stock was about twice as long as it should be. That will be fixed. Also the the gun is wider then it needs to be. The inset on the side that is further back is for shell ejection. The one further up and longer is for a charging handle.

@Skidrow925: Is the stock on that gun meant to be all.... mangled and lumpy looking? I am not quite sure how you even did that.

Have you ever made weapons before? If not I would suggest that you try a few modelling tutorials before you try to design your own weapon. Just pick a tutorial that covers basic polygon modelling for weapons and then go from there.

There are a few variations of the M247 General Purpose Machine Gun from Halo 2 that fit that role quite nicely, but CMT's is probably the better of the bunch.

I actually grabbed that with the Realistic Viewport.

If you want a render like that go into your Render Setup > Advanced Lighting set it to Light Tracer.
Add a Skylight to the scene and render. Great setup for showing off models because it's quick and has nice AO.

It looks interesting, but my only complaints would be that it seems a bit overly complex and not entirely ergonomic. I'd suggest shortening the barrel and removing the large front covering (the piece that seems to have rails on it) altogether. The stock could probably be lowered a bit, and reshaped into something a bit more remniscient of the BR55. Instead of a box, which is more for belt-fed weapons, you may want to consider a drum or c-mag.

I thought that was your concept for a moment.

Just... amazing. Thats all I can say, for it is. It melds practicality and futirism perfectly. And it would be great for an LMG (box mag), Assault Rifle (normal mag) or even a marksman's rifle. Maybe you should make those three versions?
