"Something that we wanted to inform players in advance is that we are looking to make changes and improvements to modding in Halo: Combat Evolved, which means that MCC’s support for playing Custom Edition map files will be removed in the future, as these changes are not compatible with Custom Edition’s map data format"
343 doing another great decision, CE in the MCC will go from 6000 playable maps to a handful and almost two decades worth of content slowly lost to time as custom edition becomes more obscure.

rip, here's hoping that the maps we've come to be very familiar with (coldsnap, hugeass, yoyorast island etc.) get remade...

I wanna be devils advocate and say that this might be a good thing.
Could push a new wave of map making.

This is not as bad as it sounds, we have fully accurate tag extraction now with invader and the maps can be rebuilt for MCC proper.
I think this was the right call for technical reasons, loading Custom Edition maps as-is on MCC was not really that stable for anyone that tried to use it. The native format maps work much better and dropping support for the old maps means there is noting holding back MCC CE from getting big improvements that are years overdue.
The large amounts of content that has been built up for CE over the years is not going anywhere as long as we have a way to properly rebuild them, and thankfully we do.

Since each game in MCC has now an official toolset for modding as well as steamworkshop for easy hosting and distributing, we should start porting over all the maps for Custom Edition and H2V, for the sake of preservation and for newer players to experience and having fun with them.
I have seen some ports there already, of course with the OG author creditet in the description.
As im just getting into modding, i would need proper instructions on how to port maps over tho, but im more than willing to learn
