I've checked the CE maps page for a month now. No new maps or anything, not even an Halo Monthly Update on the Ce3 channel. What's going on and why is it happening? Where is all the cool stuff from ce3? Heretic Hunt? SOI's modified campaign? Firefight?

Please tell me they weren't all wip?

The rate at which maps are developed and released seems to have slowed down significantly in the past few years. I wouldn't be surprised if one day we get new maps every 6 months/1 year.

I think it's just that the interest to create maps isn't where it used to be, but the demand to play them is still high.

We may even run into a shortage of bloodgulch mods, oh-no!

It's also due to the whole hype around halo online. It shouldn't take that long to develop a mod if you plan everything accordingly and well...

Those moments that you're sitting in front of the tv in the evening, or when you're playing xbox or PC. Do those count as life getting in the way? Or do they count as not being dedicated to your Halo modding projects?

If you work on something for too long you WILL burn out, and the final project WILL suffer for it.

I'm not sure if you were being sarcastic, my response was on the premise that you weren't.

I was not being sarcastic.
"Burning out", as you mention, can indeed be a legit reason to not finish projects.

But I don't think that's what Sean means when he says "Life gets in the way". His excuse is most often used by people who find it very hard to complete their own projects, and who wish to mask this lack of accomplishment by claiming "Life's grand activities" continuously got in the way, and prevented them from finishing their project in the most ruthless ways possible.

What I mean is that that excuse is, for the majority(not all!) of people, a poor excuse to mask laziness and/or lack of self-organization. Everyone, even those with multiple social responsibilities, has some downtime in one way or another. Be it the lazy tv evening, or something similar. It is here where dedication and organization comes into play.

Additionally, the amount of time most people here invest into their projects, are not on the level to warrant a true "burnout".

There are over a 100 archives and over 6 gig of files in the queue for me to review. However my current situation of caring for a family member remote from direct physical access to my network while still trying to maintain some semblance of a business has prevented me from doing anything more than moderating this forum. For security reasons critical to my business there is no remote access through my network's firewall. My limited time in the office where I have direct access does not allow me the opportunity to perform updates on what is essentially a costly hobby website.

Or to paraphrase someone else in this thread. "Life has gotten in the way".

Let's handle the people with job example:
- 8.5h of work
- 1.5h of travel to and from work
= 10 h
=> Still 14h left in the day.

Further:
- Sports: roughly 3*1.5h of intense sports per week (can be running, squash, gym) => 0.6h of sports per day
- Shopping, groceries, etc => say 3*0.5h per week => 0.2h per day
=> let's add some padding ==> total Sports+Shopping time per day: 1h
==> Still 13h left in the day.

A person also needs to sleep, personally, during an average weekday, I get around 6-7h of sleep per day.
==> 6h left in the day.

Alright, so on average, assume there's 6h of time left to spend on hobbies and social life. You cannot tell me that there is no time left for game development here. Even if you only work on it a few days a week, over the course of a few hours, you can still achieve reasonable progress.

Just don't waste your time on stupid things, plan properly, stay healthy, and you'll find yourself with enough physical and mental energy.

Disclaimer: obviously there are exceptions to the rule, such as what Dennis mentioned. Eg. caring for a family member. But for a more average situation, people just tend to manage their time poorly.

Personally, I sleep like 10 hours, I spend most of my time playing GTA V Online, running, watching anime, and being generally lazy. That said, I do work on my special map at least once a day and try to get some progress done on the buildings I've made.

Nostalgia. And somebody ends up posting something of some value at least once every year.

This guys knows.

Also: I think the most tedious part of any project is the polishing phase at the end, and this is where many people (including myself) lose a bit of wind. As soon as something goes "public beta" and gets played, and fun is had, I get feedback but I lose motivation a bit because there's already a playable build out there and it's fun.

Something that isn't documented at all is development workflow. Without a good workflow a developer gets hung up on details for far too long and loses interest. Another more prevalent issue are over-ambitious projects (but this kind of goes without saying).

I suppose something people could do in the mean time is just upload maps to google drive / media fire or whatever and make a thread just for sharing new maps, at least it would give us some new content while we wait.

I was more thinking simply a map sharing thread. you may be able to share OS via bit bucket.

Lets be real for a second.

If you're releasing a map, and you're particularly proud of your map, your probably gonna post it on the forums with an alternative mirror to download it from.

Dennis isn't always available, its always been like this, sure it was updated more frequently in the past (but not always). Lets keep in mind this site is ran for free, 24/7, hosts a gigantic amount of files that no other site would be able to dedicate too and that its all ran by one person. Family is obviously more important and Dennis has his own priorities too.

E: Also what Lodeman said... give or take. I work about 1-1.5 hours away and work starts at 10am and lasts until 6pm. I get about 8-9 hours of sleep and by the time I get home I have a few hours of down time to do stuff (either socially, like spending time with girlfriend or working on game dev stuff). Even if you have little free time you can always make stuff happen. Plan ahead, have goals! Research what you want to do too. Planning always makes stuff easier for yourself and will keep you motivated and focused
