EDIT: Sorry for the unclear title, it means you can just start command prompt while it's in any directory. It does not mean your tool exe, /data/.../ folder and your /tags/.../ folders can be outside of the hce folder.

Follow this tutorial: (it assumes you have windows 7. for XP/Vista, i cannot guarantee this method)

http://geekswithblogs.net/renso/archive/2009/10/21/how-to-set-the-windows-path-in-windows-7.aspx

and ADD (DO NOT EDIT THE OTHER PATHS OR YOU MAY LOSE FUNCTIONALITY IN OTHER PROGRAMS) "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Games\Halo Custom Edition" without quotations to the final entry.

Make sure that the final entry (before you add your path to your halo ce folder) ends in a semicolon.

I haven't done any real map editing or programming for halo in a while so I don't know that it will let you compile maps from any dir (probably not) but my guess is that the /data/etc path should work still when you compile a map/scripts/tags whatever.

For example your paths variable should look similar to this:

C:\Program Files;C:\Winnt;C:\Winnt\System32;C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Games\Halo Custom Edition;

Is it not easier to just create a cmd shortcut in the directory of your choice, going into the shortcut properties and emptying the "Start in" argument?

Or you could do just this.

Both would work well enough. This one doesn't clutter up your context menu, however.
