can this be done so we can put better textures in halo ce at 32bit and not just textures a lot of things. and have the map lets say my map is 300mb and now I have a new Compression thing for tool so this wood be 100mb can this be done?

zip dose use a nice Compression so y not halo ce maps ?

I didn't say that EtchyaSketch....
ok lets say I have some textures that are 2048x2048 so it's 16mb I wood have to put it as dxt1 that wood make it 4mb but I wood like to see Compression for 16bit Color and
32bit Color if possible .and as I use os so I have 3 textures to go on so you get the idea
we all could use better Compression for 16bit Color and 32bit Color... I hope some one well come up with a idea as to how this can be done for halo ce

and better Compression for map so we can have nicer looking maps

But then you get things like:


  • How many colors on the color chart does this texture use?

  • ^ Does it use enough to need 32-bit compression

  • ^^ Does it waste tons of storage space by both being 32-bit and NOT using enough color?

having better compression is a great idea and all, but or you non-programers out there that don't fully know how difficult what your asking is let me break it down:

1: its not simply a matter of compressing the maps better. sue, this may be possible, but in order to read maps they need to be decompressed again.

2: in order to decompress maps the halo game engine has a built in decompressor, this decompressor only decompresses map files. in order to make a better compression format not only would you have to create a new compressor but you would also need to modify the game engine to support this. the only other way to do this would be to make another program that decompresses the selected map file at the last moment back to the original compression format so that the engine can load the map.

3: in order to make such a program you would need it to somehow recognize that firstly halo needs to open a map and secondly that the map is X.map

4: even if this program worked you would have another problem. halo would not be able to load the map straight away so you would have to get it to hang somehow while the map is being decompressed. this would make loading said map take a lot longer than before.

to start off os normal maps need to be 32bit or tha don't look that good

and Im just seeing if it's possible to have a better compression for the maps. and the 16bit and 32bit bitmaps so thanks for putting that out there for me Jobalisk it's good to no that it can be done
