i have always liked the pit. it is one of the absolute best halo maps ever made in my opinion but i noticed one major issue. there is no good quality version for us custom edition users to play.

so thanks to the most desired map remake thread i decided to focus my efforts solely on perfectly recreating the pit in all its glory.

here is what i have gotten done on it since i started this morning:

i decided to start with a rough block out to make sure i have the scale correct then i will continuously add more details as i go.

i have a request as well from everyone who has an xbox and a capture card. i need some more referances. video or photo it doesnt matter i just need better views of the control tower, roof, and the upper floors. as well as the back corners and walls. any help is much appreciated.

all updates will be edited into the main post as well as posted in the thread.

any constructive criticism is appreciated.

also i forgot to mention that this will be using Opensauce and that i myself will not be making a "vanilla" version no matter how much everyone whines about it as the whole point of this project is to look as close as possible to halo 3.

originally i started with the model of the pit by h2mt and thought i could modify it quickly but i soon realized how badly made the geometry was. parts of the model were so bad that i just deleted them. today i have focused on redoing the covered entrance the the middle hallway.

edit: i think ur greatest challenge will be the gravlifts that are at each sniper tower, they never seem to sync on-line right and they dont seem to be consistent in strength, any thoughts on what you'll do for those? teles maybe?

i might use teleporters or i might use some other method i remember seeing a while ago, i wonder what would happen if i made a long string of teleporters without the screen effect... would that work?

the zteam pit died with zteam. it is part of the reason i started working on this project.


Edit: i still need reference images. so if anyone with a capture card can help it would be greatly appreciated. i need clear pictures of: control tower, roof, upper rooms, back hallways, ramps and the back wall.

Edit: Actually that's a good idea. ill remake pitfall from the recent mappack. but thats to be done after the halo 3 version is finished

I want H3 tags cause I haven't seen good H3 maps besides Foundry (though the BR was baaaad) and I know this one will be pretty.

EDIT: also, consider just using ladders instead of grav-lift substitutes, since they're short vertical lifts anyway.

you might not like halo 3 but there are plenty of people who do. i will definitely do different versions afterwards but the halo 3 version will be finished above everything else. if people like halo reach then i have a surprise for them later on down the road

If you plan on remaking any map, do the Ivory Tower remake they had in reach. That map is absolutely stunning.

Also sidenote, watch how you censor yourself. Dennis doesnt appreciate workarounds like that and censors everything >.>

that is one of my planned things to finish. i had one in the works a long while back but it was never finished due to my lack of modeling skill at the time.

but yet again i am getting ahead of myself which is why everything else i have done has fallen flat.

progress will be slower from here on as the amount of time i will have to work will be significantly less as college classes start today.

i know how frustrating it can be to be left in the dark about a project that your anticipating so that's why every once in a while ill post a photo of what i am working on at the moment that will also be edited into the main post as well.

I had a little WIP of my own:


Considering that my xbox is about as close to my PC as it can get (you've all seen my setup), I was able to take this cruddy reference images. The pictures themselves were taken with my iPod, but obviously it looks better in person.


So far I've really only done work on that building towards the right, but I plan to model in every detail for everything else eventually, but I've only been working on this for about a week.
The image above is one I took while in forge mode (my HDD is at my cousin's so no theater mode.)

I can send you some reference images if you wish, I don't need any since I've got my systems here.


The pic above is ms paint edit of a photo I took for measuring the window sizes (using the H3 biped model in 3ds) The real MC is the one to the immediate left of the reticle. My main challenge is getting the proportions right, and the texture doesn't quite line up to my windows, but I'll get to that soon.

And yes those reference images will definitely come in handy as it is extremely difficult to get stuff right without clear images.that part to the right of your image above has been a bugger because i cant find any images of it...

though i think you'll probably beat me to the punch on this one as i am busy as hell now that i have college to deal with... not to mention having the Xbox there means you can reference anything, anytime...

I mean no OS with the classic weapon set. Hear me out: I know everyone likes custom h3 weapons (including me, if they're nice and shiny :D) but there's no harm in releasing a classic version. I'd host it till the end of time! Heck it'd also be a great way to test - yknow, release the classic version first, then release the other version later, incorporating any fixes to bugs that might come up.

Anyway regardless of your decision, I can't wait to play this :)

yes it is. i just started working on it when i posted the image. if i end up working with Jesse this will occupy my spare time. if not then depending on the reception (and if i want to) i might work on this instead of the pit as it would be a bit redundant to have two people working on two versions of the same map.
