Hello, Howdy, HI!
I am working on a map that is indoor and is a starship with jeffery's tubes, and in some sections of the jefery's tubes I have (tried to) make/made grates to see into the main room for the jeffery's tube and visa versa.
So anyways, I made the grate texture found out that I needed an alpha channel in the texture for the transparency to work correctly and did so with no success. :(
The outcome was just the grate with black where the transparency should be.
Also, I made the alpha layer in paint shop pro 7 and when it was compiled, the bitmap didn't have an alpha layer... soooo... yerr.... I googled s*** and came here for input. :)
Anyone?

Use Photoshop (Or i think GIMP can do the same work), open a new channel and name it Alpha 1, and.. you know what to do then...

Gimp is free being open source and all and offers many of the features of Photoshop.

Regardless, yes. A copy of Photoshop and tutorials on Alpha channels will get you pretty much set.

Make your grate a shader_transparent_glass or something like that.
or if you want to use a shader_environment, your transparency is determined by the alpha of the bump map not the base map.(also relies on alpha tested being checked)
if you don't know how to make a bump map, just make it 128 grey and work on the alpha for your grate, that might help Edited by OrangeJuice on Jun 17, 2013 at 02:19 PM

I see you have the proper alpha as a layer, but I can't tell if you have it in the channels as "alpha".
Also, try doing it on the bump map for the grate, that's how transparency is achieved for some things in CE. Alpha in diffuse maps is used for specular.
