Does anyone else just find it irking when they see a map on a website with a word that the person clearly doesn't understand? I see this all the time and I know it should get on my nerves as much as it is but I can't help it. Like, whenever someone tries to make their map sound "deep" or "ominous" by using a word that doesn't apply to the map, it's annoying. This trend was started by Bungie in Halo 2 and since, people have been using the template for their own maps in CE.
Like, every time I see a map like hce.halomaps.org/index.cfm?fid=4234, the only thing that comes to mind is "Where did A-W go?"
Like, how come nothing bad happens on those stations?
Oh, and don't get me started on this. http://hce.halomaps.org/index.cfm?fid=3375
I admire when a map can pull off being "cool" without necessarily having a unique name. The reason why I loved Beaver Creek, Ivory Tower and Blood Gulch is because the names of these maps describe exactly what the map is and doesn't have to seem "cool" or "creative" to do it. On the other hand, we have maps like "Exile" from Halo 4. What, exactly, are you being exiled from? If you're exiled, how come there's always 15 other people with you? It's lousy design.
I can't be the only one who sees this.

I don't see how it could bother someone unless the image was misleading too and it somehow fooled you into downloading it. You can see thumbnails in the search queue anyway.

Map names have always been just map names to me, but I agree about the whole naming scheme. Exile?.... Meh. Keep it simple.

OP, why did you not pick a regular username like Bryan or Mike, I hate made up user names that only scream for attention.

"Ally Suzumiya" is a combination of my real first name, and a fictional character's last name. It'd be different if my name was "Ally, the venerable corporate conglomerate of Bungie"

Why would you need a fictional characters name ? This irks me.

I want to see your notes.

Dissonance: inconsistency between the beliefs one holds or between one's actions and one's beliefs

Note to self:
AllySuzumiya prefers the use of more exacting names
AllySuzumiya doesn't doesn't use an exacting username
Maniac1000 points it out and AllySuzumiya defends the username
[end notes]

Now I am not judging AllySuzumiya for his opinions he is perfectly free to hold them even if the two are dissonant. I was just highlighting what Maniac1000 pointed out indicating that some may not get the concept.

Using a first and last name is as exact as you can get for a screen name, it'd be different if I had used a name like "drowning doom" or "malevolent one" or something like that. My name isn't intended to be "cool" or bad***. It's just a normal name, save for the fact that the last name is of an anime character. It's apples and oranges.
Oh, and please stop trying to R63 me. I've yet to see an instance where a guy named "Allister" would prefer to be called "Ally". I'm not saying it doesn't happen, but when it does; I'm not exactly looking for it, y'know. It's not something that a normal person WOULD look for.. Unless they were from 4chan or something.

Your name was never important in my comment, i was merely pointing out something which i am having trouble explaining. I apologize if i offended in any way.
I do not think too hard about map names, in fact i think the only time i even think about them at all is when having to name one and even then i just pick whatever comes to mind.

Do you think I enjoy being called Sali? People began calling me that hoping it would hurt my feelings or something so I just accepted it as an everyday nickname. Sup.

I was thinking more along the lines of this

been trying to come up with something to say for this topic. I guess I'll just say this: I am sick of this obsession with ancient-latin map names, they're cool, but the maps they're paired with.... aren't that cool

Let me first state that I have absolutely no issue with your screen name or real name and have no idea what prompted the decision to combine, as you said, a real and fiction name into the username, nor is it particularly relevant except that it is not exactly... well... "exact". :)

I think what Maniac1000 was illustrating and what I was observing is that the exactness or applicability of the map name for some people has as much relevance or importance as the exactness of a username.

Your hangup and constant reversion to gay sex is somewhat pathological and says much more about your state of mind than it does about anything else.

Perhaps his/her name is entirely applicable to his/herself in that he/she is apparently actually called Ally and he/she may be interested in anime. Thus Ally may merely represent his/her birthname and Suzumiya his/her great interest in anime.

That is in contrast to using the latin name for a liver to represent a map which is shaped like a brain, for example. The word/name 'liver' is not applicable to the brain, it is only loosely connected due to a network of nerves and electrical signals. There is no further relevance.
Please note(before you use it in argument), the liver does not have an interest in the brain nor does the brain have an interest in the liver. The portions of the brain which provide instructions to the liver do not hold their own form of personality, though they are loosely controlled by a personality or 'soul' which is not yet proven to actually be physically present.

Though, I feel the same way, I must remind you're violating one of the site's guidelines

"Think before you post. Do not post in haste or anger, wait before posting - the message will still be there - cool down and think before you respond."

But yeah, It was rather irrelevant.
