This probably belongs in the Halo 2 Vista section but I thought I'd post the source so people don't have to go clicking links. It's at the bottom of the article.

To switch gears ever so slightly, we’re sad to report that the service end-date for Halo 2 PC Multiplayer will be February 15, 2013. We’ve been monitoring the population for months, and it’s been peaking consistently at approximately 20 players or less. Those that own this game can continue to enjoy Multiplayer over LAN after that date; however our network services will be turned off at that time. We love you, Halo 2 PC, and you will live forever in our hearts.

Hopefully this never happens to Halo CE.

Well considering H2V can't even run properly on W7 or W8... I doubt theres a reason to keep supporting it. Hard to believe the game has been out 6 years now.

So much wasted potential :(

I don't fully understand this. They are shutting down the servers, but who pays for the servers? Are you saying that if I personally paid for a server on to host halo 2 on gameservers, they would just come in and say.
NOPE!!! :D
Goodbye!!!

Or is that not how the halo 2 servers work?

Direct IP will still work, but the server browser and matchmaking won't.

Gotcha. So they just aren't going to track the servers and send the info to us anymore pretty much?

yeah, but it doesn't run properly out of the box. That's a big no no as far as them "supporting" or even caring about the game.

Yep. The master server, which controls the server list and matchmaking, is going. Direct IP will still work fine.

not suprised. that's what you get when you release a game for an operating system nobody wants, with very limited capabilities.

a damn shame, the pc port deserved far more love than it got from the porters.

It wasn't even the porters fault at all, it was Microsofts because they wanted it limited, not only by OS but by mapping creation and other things. They are the only people to blame, otherwise Hired Gun did a decent job.

? I'm on 7 and mine installed and works fine SP and MP, with no thirdparty apps involved :|.

Also, yes, as higuy stated, and I will say again, the porters of H2V were good people, they worked heavily with one of the best HCE mappers at the time (Nitro), who was closely linked with the community, and also worked on H2CE. Half of the team registered on the modacity forums at the time just to help people with the damn game. They planned on releasing full EK support along with future updates. You can blame M$ for everything that went wrong with H2V, and everything else that is going wrong with their PC platform support at the time being.

I guess it works for some people then, but I know there's lots of people who have issues with it. IIRC, Hired Gun was put together by MS for the port, or maybe it was the tools team? I believe they were separate companies solely created for working on H2V, both which had terms dictated by MS. The game was clearly put together by some half assed committee who probably understood very little about games.

Funny how it is ONLY meant for vista, nothing more, nothing less. Makes you think, how hard did they actually try to make it OS specific? lmao.

a lot of people played the game with the Windows XP crack anyway... i admit it, i played the campaign in windows xp...
When my computer stopped working and i buyed a new one with Windows 7, i purchased the game and started playing multiplayer just fine.. whit no external apps opened.. (the damn problem was that update of the game from GFWL.. that update removed the 640x480 resolution to play the game, the minimum one was 800x600, it was kinda lagged for me, but with a trick with windows i was able to play it at 640x480.. he)

anyway.. i need to install this game again.. :/

I played Halo 2 at 320x240.

I don't remember seeing an option for Direct IP.
