The detail maps are controlled by the alpha of the base map, white is primary black is secondary detail bitmaps. The number value below the detail map slot is how many times the detail map will tile, so a higher number will result in a more tiled detail bitmap, making it appear smaller. Detail object collections are something completely different. Those are for a tall 3d effect of grass or something like that.
