What do you guys want in a single player level? (eg: weapons, vehicles)

The reason I ask this is because I'm going to try to make my own SP, but I want to make sure I'm using what people want. Thanks.

For a good campaign , you need a good history, a good bsp and the h1 tagset is good not neccesary use crappy tags ^^

The whole vibe of Halo SP is discovering new things. The way a particular tag looks that you fight throughout the entire level matters not.

So, choose your favorite tagset (as in favorite visuals, favorite balance etc), craft a creative and interesting storyline...and then create your level(s) to gradually build up and unveal these new interesting discoveries. As for encounters I like to see creative ways to use your tagset, preferably with multiple ways to tackle a specific encounter.

However what Tiel says is completely untrue, re-using existing models in your tagset is perfectly fine if that is what YOU the maker prefer to do for whatever reasons you may have. Don't let the opinion of any kids on the forum influence your style since frankly you should be making something you'd want to play yourself in the style you prefer ;-)

Guess we both misunderstood each other. I means there's nothing wrong with re-using existing tag (models). I too support custom BSPs, though as Lone has shown you can still do great things with existing BSPs such as he is doing in his flood campaign.

When you all say you want a "well thought out story". What do you mean?

Do you mean tie the story into Halos story? Or create a story entirely different that has nothing to do with Halos story?

As for the BSP, I'm no modeler, but I'm thinking of using some BSPs from the art of Halo section from this site. They must be good BSPs to get there.

And of course I will do my best to do good encounters...

Thanks for all of the opinions though, you've given me a lot to think about.

I meant encounters that tie into the story.

For example, from Gears of War 1, which I was just playing earlier.

While inside the green house place, a Berserker (very ugly, stupid, but scary guy) comes running at you. You can't do anything but run, but then you get the hammer of dawn, and Anya, your little girl friend back at control tells you that the Hammer of Dawn is online. You get to use it, etc.

Basically what im saying is, use dialouge and creative encounters to tie in interesting gameplay with a small amount of story.

So like when you hop out of a pelican have the Sargent yell: "GO GO GO", or when your walking into a building a marine says: "I gotta bad feeling about this". Or do you mean something else then that?

Also with the story, I could just make something up then? Like you being the forgotten spartan (other than Master Chief) that the UNSC suddenly remembered about during the UNSC - Covenant war.

the green house place

Sounds like a good BSP.

What do I want?

Depends. What. Do. I. Want.

Halo 3 Weps with ODST SMG and Pistol.

Basically, a good tagset all round. It'd need good bipeds, good vehicles, good weapons, good scenery,

GOOD BSP! I CANNOT STRESS THIS ENOUGH! A good BSP is what seperates a map with a beautiful tagset but crappy bsp, from a map with, maybe not too good a tagset and stuff, but AWESOME bsp. Take for example Lumoria. They barely used any custom weapons or vehicles, the only really custom thing I think are the structures, the ODSTs, and the recoloured sword elites. Yet, IT HAS BECOME FAMOUS. Why? nWell thought out bsp and encounters, Can't get better than that.

My advice? Study what Bungie has done in their games. Think of your favorite encounters, go there, and look at it from all angles. If it's on CE, use flycam, if its halo 2 or 3 or ODST or Reach, you just might have to dart around and look.

My recommendations? Use a superb tageset that you know will work beautifully. I have an idea for a campaign myself, Halo 3 based, where it covers lots of environments. Another good thing TM did: They made all the environments interesting. The caves, the tunnels, the structures, the encounters, the bridge, y'know, stuff like that.

I tip my hat to you good sir, for you may one day ascend into the elite of halo custom edition.

I also recommend you listen ot Orangejuice. I love longsword surgical strikes.

To be honest, the classic tagset is still the best in my opinion as far as weapons go. With the actual mission itself, a good story always helps, but don't overcomplicate it. We don't need a novel. What I like the most in a custom SP level though is playing on the other side. Making the player an Elite or Flood makes it more interesting.
