The Pig and the Farmer

My brothers, the inexorable march of freedom, liberty and capi-tag-lism continues. Last week, as I am sure you all watched with horror in your eyes, our old friend ASP GRUNTS attempted – fruitlessly – to throw us all off from uncovering him and his role in this terrible scheme. He did what many of us thought was unthinkable: he leaked an unfinished map. But do not panic, for we are now vigilantly guarded over by an order reborn from wars past… the Order of the Night Watchmen.


Almost five years ago now, the last iteration Order of Night Watchmen was formed of members new and old to combat the threat Masterz and his uprising posed to the fortress-forum Modacity. Masterz is a new enemy, but he is not the one that I am worried about. No, there is another. The one this order was designed to stop, the one I have been hunting for since my discharge from the Modacity Defense Forces: The Core. The Core is a new name for… well, a ghost. A figurehead without a face, he’s led armies across the forumscape, destroying all in his path and subjecting innocent taggers to his steel fist and boot of repression. But, he and his legion have not been heard from in years. At this point, he’s almost a myth, but I know better. I know he’s still out there somewhere… watching… waiting… making plans for the day that he will make his terrifying return and subject all of Halo Custom Edition to his tyrannical rule.

The Fortress Modacity had fallen because of this new marauder ‘Masterz’, but he is only a fringe threat, a smaller piece of this yet unsolved puzzle. Masterz has a following in his own right, enough to warrant action on the Halomaps front, but it just doesn’t make sense. Masterz was a valiant defender of fortress Gearbox against The Core in ages past… But anyhow, I’m getting ahead of myself. Here’s what I’m really trying to get at: the New Halomods settlement is starting to get onto its feet, and fortress Halomaps is as strong as ever. It… It just feels like it did before Gearbox fell. If I’m right, and this ‘Masterz’ is able to stage an uprising in Halomaps… we’ll have nowhere left to run.

We all know forum history, folks. However, there’s a side of this you all have not heard. A dark side. When the Core’s agents came, they came fast and hard, wiping everything away in their unstoppable torrent of Red rage. First, fortress Gearbox went dark… the Core’s revolutionary guard destroyed it from the inside-out. I remember hearing the blood-curdling screams of shaderers as they were burned alive, only worth their weight in the amount of product they could produce. I remember hearing that as I could do nothing but stand by and watch.

The survivors fled to form Fortress Modacity and other stragglers were offered sanctuary by Old Halomods. The horrors that I witnessed there are what pushed me to look up to one of the older Nobles in fortress Modacity. He used to go by the name of Snafubarsol, and revealed to me he was the member of an old order created to defeat the Core, and to defend the indefensible. He took me under his wing, trained me, honed my skills, and prepared me for the war to come.

Then the other fortresses went dark, one by one… Old Halomods, then Halofront… Those that survived were subject to the unspeakably cruel “Great Superbounce Forward”, in which the new Communist leaders forced taggers to collectivize against their will, pooling their resources into countless maps... It was supposed to increase production but all that ever was produced were Bloodgulch mods and Box maps. Oh, the Reds tried to hide it all behind fancy numbers, but we all knew the truth. After their purge of the Shaderer and Beta Tester intelligentsia, there was nobody left to do the most important parts of mapping. Quality plummeted and those poor taggers and mappers were left to starve. Millions died. Those that survived fared no better under other Red “reforms”: the failed The Culture of Evolution, the betrayal of A Hundred Criticism Threads Blossoming… Every night I wept for my enslaved brothers.

…And then, the strangest thing happened. A Modacity patrol skirmished with a regiment of the Core’s Praetorian Guard and won. The unstoppable horde had been halted with ease right outside of our gates. That was the last contact we ever had with the Core. There was peace for many years, and Modacity flourished.

Then one day, the tags stopped coming. Whispers turned into discussion, discussion turns to outbursts, and outbursts turned into rebellion. Many claimed the administration was at fault, but I’ve already shown you why that just isn’t true. Masterz soon became the loudest voice in the crowd, accusing the administration of Modacity of discouraging creation and becoming a ‘circlejerk’ while staking claim on all of the main tag producers for his own purposes. Tension was in the air, and soon isolated clashes between loyalist forces and Masterz’ rebels soon turned into an all-out war.

The rebels called for a staff gutting, and an end to (in their eyes) an end to TheGhosts’ absent yet despotic rule. These early battles were my first taste of action, and I was one of two new inductees to the Order of the Night watchmen—the last inductees—to fight in the streets of Modacity under the lead of Snafubarsol. Do not think the Order is a paramilitary organization; we prefer to wage our ‘battles; under the cover of darkness, but desperate times call for desperate measures. However, my war stories can be saved for another time, as well as the battle of the Modacity archival building. We all thought the insurrection was crushed after the capitulation, but once again, I have already revealed that there were changes being made behind the scenes in spite of the people’s wishes. However, the Order soon became all but too aware of the regime change that was occurring.

One cold night, there was the loud crash of the door of my quarters in Modacity square. I managed to get a quick look down the stairs and saw the characteristic appearance of steel helmets lit in the window’s dim light. At this point, my instincts took over, and I grabbed a lockbox, climbed onto the nearest window sill, slid down the vertical gutter into an alleyway behind my flat, and snuck into a nearby sewer. I knew these sewers like the back of my hand from the battle of Modacity only months before, and navigated my way to and access way to the fort’s Watchman Lodge, only to see it in the process of being razed to the ground. I then went to a site outlined by safety protocols and waited for morning. In the morning, I was woken by two other Night Watchmen and was told the unthinkable had happened: in one night, an extermination order was carried out against the Order by the Modacity administration. Worst of all, they were lead by one of our own: Snafubarsol, the man that I had looked up to for so many years, and had lead us victoriously into battle had sold us out... I was heartbroken. Two veterans of two different influential battles… both looking destroy everything we stand for. But why? What has the power to make these two figures fall from grace?

Snafubarsol was soon made a Moderator in the Modacity administration, heading the secret police whose sole reason for existence is to hunt down and execute the Watchmen. We have been on the run ever since, and that’s why we have settled in this great forum. We are here to make a living… but above all we want to figure out what happened.

In the short term, we are here to make sure Masterz doesn’t get a foothold in this forum, we don’t want another Modacity happening ever again. His Red slave-driving policies shall never be enacted here as they were all those years ago so long as there is blood in my veins and breath in my lungs.

Are you really that calloused? Who do you think you are, asking that of a veteran who put his tags on the line for the good of Halo CE? I stood up and fought for my forum. You kids have had the luxury of having a forum in 'peace', but now that there's a hint of trouble you cower like dogs. I held my childhood friend FlyinRooster in my arms, watching as the life drained from his face after being run through with a rebel’s ripped H2 sword tag... Why don't you tell him that his sacrifice was worthless? Then there's L33T... well, that's what we called him, you guys called him 'CAD'... He was a scientist working on new ways to utilize tags more efficiently after the war... and then they took him away with all of those unlucky others. I never saw him again.

At least they aren't alive to see Halo's last line of defense just disregard what they died to preserve.

I... I didn't mean to yell at you like that... I’m sorry. I know you’ve been instrumental to all of this and it was no doubt a result of your actions that the CE3 bomb plot never came to fruition… just the thought of all those audience members lying helplessly under the rubble like so many of my comrades sends a shiver down my spine. I’m just under a lot of stress trying to find out what, if anything, the significance of all these 6s is… They keep showing up. There has to be something more to it, but what!?

It seems this cyber-war... our war... has transitioned to reality. Earthquakes were felt across the country today... August 23.... 2x3... well, you know what that is. To all those who still would not believe: here is your wake-up call. Will you answer, or will there have to be more tragedies like this?

It's clear the rebels have obtained Earthquake technology, and are using it to try to down Halomaps' servers... but what they failed to realize was that Virginia is not Connecticut. Maybe next time they'll be closer... but what do they have to gain from this? If the servers go down, the tags disappear... Maybe they are trying to set up a puppet-server that mirrors Halomaps exactly, but without the threat of Dennis to hold back their onslaught. I am trying to imagine how these events play into their sick plan and each way is more sickening than the last.
