Can you get a screenshot?
I don't remember black triangles off the top of my head other than
a-backface cull is not on or
b-smoothing error
It's probably something else.

The reverse sides of shapes are black in max 2011 unless you right-click, object properties, check backface cull.

A screenshot would be really cool then. It would help a lot if we got to see what this triangle looks like...

I'd still like to know how to create vertices correctly, or an alternative to boolean.

Go to 20:40 and see how to snap to verts while using cut.

Boolean is pretty good. If you can target weld, you can definitely use boolean to model things.
As for creating verts, try turning on snap. Right-clicking the magnet with the ^3 button lets you edit your snap settings. You should be able to create verts on edges.

Er, don't tubrosmooth? Whatever you are smoothing probably doesn't need turbosmooth.
Actually, you can set the meshsmooth iterations lower or something.

Or just don't use boolean, it's a fairly messy method most of the time anyways.

Yup, when I tried using boolean, it made tons of random edges everywhere which I had to delete invidually, and I had a messy model.
