If the original Halo CE engine is outdated, can't you just replace it? I dunno how engines work and all, but just wondering. Or do you just have to re-create the game?

Lol. The engine is pretty much the game itself. If you just take it away the engine the game could never even happen; so yeah. Its not just that easy to replace

I don't know much about engines, but I know takes a lot of Javascript, C++ and codes, numbers. I have absolutely no clue how to do any of that kind of stuff. But I doubt you could just replace the Halo CE engine.

...I'm fairly certain Bungie did not use Javascript in their engine :L

I believe halo ce halo I should say is written in either C# or C++ and uses Direct3D as the graphics pipeline.

Technically you could use another updated engine for halo but you would have to convert alot of things that make up a map file. But to answer your question you could infact use another engine.

It's just would you do the work unpaid?

Wouldn't it be illegal to change or upgrade the game engine?

You can look at the game like it's a million piece jigsaw puzzle, stretched across a mile. As soon as you 'modify', break, or remove a piece, the puzzle is incomplete. You would have to modify the other puzzle pieces around it to make it fit together. And when you modify the puzzle pieces around it, you have to modify more puzzle pieces to make it fit, and on and on and on, until all the pieces of the puzzle fit.

Even if you could decompile and recompile the game to update API's, graphics and physics, it would take a long time and considerable blood, sweat and tears to make it stable. That's basically how many operating systems and computer programs are made.

If you sell for profit or distribute the game with an updated engine, then that would be illegal. If you do sell it for profit, Microsoft WILL hunt you down like a dog.

I remember a while back a guy was planning on (re)building the Halo Engine or Game something of this nature, but he apparently got shut down.

Engines are exactly like their car counterpart. They lie under the hood, providing power to the game. In that case, they set important things such as physics and rendering of geometry and how they are used within the game. The actual geometry and tags lie on top of the engine.

This diagram is not meant to show the engine of the game, but it should give you a good idea of how the architecture of the game is set up.

** imagine the systems as players, and the interfaces as the controllers.

I'm sure it's possible to convert Halo 1 to a newer engine, but it would be very difficult. Morroblivion project succeeded in converting all of Morrowind to the Oblivion engine in the Elder Scrolls series. http://morroblivion.com/forums/morroblivion/mods/753

I tried that and it worked.

XD So just to get this straight. It's possible, but very hard, and even if it worked, it would be breaking a few rules, and Microsoft would come to your house to beat you up. Well this sucks...
