Hello people of Halomaps, I create this thread today in the hopes of gaining some inspiration for a custom HUD. I come empty handed simply because I have no inspiration at the moment, which I hope will change soon. What I am proposing is for you, the people, to provide some practical concepts for a HUD. You can submit drawn ideas, photo shopped ideas, or anything that will express your idea to me effectively.

In short, someone give me a custom HUD so I can make it.

My only rules and limits are:

1) No copies of HUDs created in any other game.

2) No heavily ridiculous ideas. (within the game's limits.)

3) Would be great if it was compatible with many weapons, even if it requires a small icon change.

4) Must display shields and health in some way.

And of course I won't let you guys have all the fun as I am going to draw and design a HUD in my spare time at school. Since I am an over achiever IRL, I always finish my homework days before it's due so that means I never take my textbooks and notebooks home, so that kind of limits my ability to draw at home, which is why I am relying on you guys for ideas.


Here are some HUDs that have come into existence over the past few years.

Halo 3

See how the HUD quickly and directly communicates the amount of ammo in the clip, and amount of ammo in reserve? And the grenades amount is also told for both of them.

It's these things that are important when designing a HUD which is how easily the user can interpret what the HUD is saying. All of these elements can be seen in the HUDs of almost any game.

Halo 2


Call of duty MW2


CMT snow grove.


These are all re-occurring things in almost all games and should be considered.

1st - Beer Goggles - make all MC's you see as thin, hawt women as damage/drinking increases.

2nd - No damage meter - but use multiple cracks in the hud to illustrate damage severity, with the final damage amount as a general blur - maybe even a scripted blur effect/labored breathing sound (dialogue sounds).

3rd - Diving Mask - sorta like a zoom mask, with areas outside of primary vision field blurred

Number 3 reminds me of the HUD used when you play as that CIA guy in black ops wearing the HAZMAT suits.

You can take inspiration from other games, but no exact copies. See Lone Wolf's first picture? That's exactly what I'm looking for. That one looks really good IMO. Keep bringing these suggestions!

Mai dual wield HUD plox?
Anyways, maybe something like this. I suggest this kind of layout, not colors or anything. White colors would be cool.

I mean, if you want something different, why not put heath at the bottom and radar at the top?
The heath, shield, ammo, and grenades are centered. I just think HUD stuff in the corners gets old. However, the radar and gametype don't need to be centered, so I guess put them in corners like shown. Dunno how you stand on the left/right aspect of it. Maybe a little bit more ambidextrous, maybe flip it around. I don't know.

What about doing something different with the shields - instead of it being just a bar, like in most of the HUDs out there, you could maybe try something circular? Dunno if that could work, maybe the circle recedes into the centre or something? I don;t know how clear that would e to the player though, might be more difficult to gauge.

@Slappy: That is the most beautiful thing I have seen in ages :3

Dunno if this would work, again, but I am all for minimalism, however I would need to play in illustrator and PS to see if this would be possible. How about clustering the information in a curt, precise form around the reticule, keeping the alphas low so that it remains visible but is at that border stage where it isn't distracting from shooting at enemies? If it wasn't too busy, so to speak, it might work, and that way all the information you need (perhaps health and ammo only) would be right where you are looking?

Again, might be horrendously distracting, I'm sure there's a reason I've never seen it tried...

I don't like the ammo being displayed on the left. Apart from Halo 1, all the Halo games (and most FPS games) display the ammo on the right side of the screen for one simple reason: that's where the gun is. It sort of makes sense that the two would be close to each other.
