Still won't go through. It just keeps coming back to the "Please wait to download" shtick.

Google sketchup will NOT EVER teach you proper modeling methods and topology techniques. it's for 10 year olds who are bored and want to feel like they're creative. If you want to become serious about modeling don't touch it, don't even look at it. Sketchup has its place, far away from inexperienced modelers look for real practice.

Go to google and search for the Beretta 9000 tutorial, that's a good way to jump into the basics.

I have never tried Wings, but from what I hear its more or less on part with Sketchup. I started out modeling with Bryce, so it was actually kind of easy to transfer from Bryce to 3ds max.

#1: Mass Driver Cannon (or what-have you) Featured in the last level of "Halo: Reach" untextured (i can get the ripped textures, but you'll have to get someone else to uvw them)

#2: Shortsword, Featured in the game "Halo: Wars"

#3: Sabre Fighter, Featured in the level "Long Night of Solace" in the game "Halo: Reach" (once again i have textures for this, proper ones, but someone else will have to uvw it)

#4: Falcon, Featured in the game "Halo: Reach" (i also have textures for this one, but they'll once again need someone else to uvw it).

Thats my collection of reach models... Mostly

Gmax or 3ds Max are essentially the best ways to start program-wise; Gmax being the most affordable initially before college (It's FREE!) and when you reach college 3ds Max is free via Student Edition (cannot sell products created from it though).

Gmax is a great beginning program because it's very simplistic and is good for general modding. However, when you go for hardcore modeling, it hiccups in lack of advanced features, UI, and has vertices disappear in the interface screens.

That, and even with uber powerful computer, Gmax tends to die randomly.

Booyah. Out of the even dozen modeling programs I've tried, Max is by far the most powerful.

refer to the "blender beginner's course" in the second link and you'll be up to par in no time. seriously, after like two days of studying that the program started to feel natural. take the time to actually complete the assignments and you'll be fine.

granted, I didn't bother with the pdf tutorials, myself

Max Maya and Blender are all equally as powerful, they just differ in the way they handle things. Having learned on 3DS Max I can say Maya is much faster to work in, and also has become the most common in the industry. It all depends on what the individual can do with it. Hell I've seen mind blowing work some from Milkshape 3D

Lets not forget about Bryce. That program is wicked nice. I cut my teeth on that program. And in fact, here are some images I made using it.

wings3d is just a uber streamlined gmax/3dsmax. no real rendering, no animation system(yet), has uv unwrapping etc. its only like 30mb at most, and runs straight off a usb drive(which is great going from school and back). i model faster with wings since the menus are contextual to w/e u got selected(all right click for menus, barely need the keyboard except for naming and exact angles etc.
