Actually the person who first made "Windows" sold it to MS for about $50k

Your history is off a bit. MS-DOS was developed from an operating system called QDOS - "Quick and Dirty Operating System" - written by Tim Paterson of Seattle Computer Products for the Intel 8086 processor. Tim Paterson based his design on CP/M (Control Program for Microcomputers) operating system written by Gary Kildall of Digital Research. Microsoft bought the rights to QDOS for a onetime payment of $50,000 and then re-branded and licensed MS-DOS to IBM for the IBM PC.

Are you saying that Apple took code from Microsoft and used it to create the Mac OS? Because then I do believe you have it backwards, Microsoft was the one who took the GUI
Apple purchased the base graphical OS (GUI) and the idea of a mouse from Xerox Corporation. Microsoft developed Windows from the same Xerox OS and when Apple sued MS for copyright infringement in Windows 1, MS proposed a settlement and licensed features of Apple's operating system. Apple agreed and a contract was drawn up with an agreement to include use of Apple features in Microsoft Windows version 1.0 and all future Microsoft software programs. When Apple later sued MS for trademark and patent infringement in Windows 2 and 3 the court sided with MS because of the licensing agreement.

Both operating systems have their strengths and weaknesses and for some strange reason inspire nearly religious fervor in their disciples causing endless bickering over which is better. The best one is the one that get the job you need done… done. Please do not start a discussion on operating systems. This thread is about which is best for Halo CE.

That makes sense. I was only given the short version of the story then. Thanks.

I guess I remembered wrong. Thank you Dennis.

And the question still remains.
Which runs HCE best?

So far it looks like XP or 7

I'm siding with XP still, HCE was made to run on it. I don't know how well 7 would do with it.

Mac = Fail.

Why does Mac fail? Please don't tell me you're just jumping on the bandwagon.

And DOS is the bomb. Actually any command line interface is cool, so long as you remember the commands. Very impractical nowadays though.

Whoops, I meant for the average user it's impractical, very practical for servers.

MAC's are crap, I don't like them. But that's my opinion. I can't stand them.
With MAC's you have what you have, there is no customization or compatability.

Stop trying to act clever - "oh I know all the command lines". :/

Mac's are actually quite nice if you knw0o what they are for.
MagACannons are awesome.
Also when did he say he knew them all?

Anyway...

Actually from what I have observed of him it is fairly normal.

Can I please just get an answer?

I think it was you who said you didn't like Vista or 7 because you're not used to them? If that's the case, stick to XP. You're going to be using the computer for more than HCE, the difference in performance probably won't be that noticeable to make or break one system from the other.

I can't stand them either. I was just curious if you were one of those who's never touched a Mac and hated them for no reason. And show me in my post where I said I know all the command lines? I open up wikipedia half the time when using command prompt for stuff, and look up the commands.

Yes Linux.

I have an old box running Red Hat 9, and it's the fastest most stable operating system for its time. There are no viruses for it, you can download all the porno and the hacks you want and you'll never get a virus.

(don't ask me how i know)

from my experience, CE works best on XP.

I've played it on XP, Vista, and 7 on a Gforce 8 series. Vista and 7 both have issues with decals with the Gforce 8 series, the frame rate will drop in half and become unplayable unless decals are off. Windows 7 seemed better about it, but it still occurred. This problem never occurred on XP.

I've never used a mac or linux, so can't really say.

From my experience so far, I would say Win 7 just because ever since I got it, I have had much better visuals and a lot less lag. I have a computer that handles it with ease though. I would say not to use Win 7 if your computer can just barely support the OS. Stick with your XP in that case

Why does everyone quote the wall of text? It's easy enough to snip out everything but the relevant parts...

And I already addressed that. Thank you though.

In the end, who really cares what OS is best? It all comes down to personal preference, so no need to argue about it. I run Mac OSX and Winblows 7.
