Ugh, I'm sorry everybody. I'd like to just give everyone a Christmas present of a released...whatever my map is, but it ain't happening. Yes, I'm still stuck on portalling. If you can think you can help, PM me. PORTALLING ONLY at the moment. If portalling is so easy, why am I having such a hard time?

i can. i know this tool in max that does the main portal perfectly, and i mean perfectly then from there you can move them if you need to to divide the bases. for this map you might have to manipulate them around the underground parts. then the exact portals are actually the easy ones.

I'm trying something new at the suggestion of Slappy. I also stumbled upon a likely reason why some of my recent portalling attempts haven't been working: the portals weren't linked to the frame...3ds Max 2012 doesn't have an easy way of viewing children in selection lists though I figured it out.

yeah linking them to the frame is important, and make sure that the north to west portals at the side of red team face the red side, and the same goes for the blue side. doing portals on my own map now so, i now know this stuff. goodluck. Edited by ally on Dec 11, 2011 at 05:08 PM

Hey, so I've been following this thread for awhile now. I'm looking forward to this map from what you say it's gonna be like. But people were talking about grenades and things like that in earlier pages, so I have a suggestion: Smoke grenades. I know that Celar Exile (http://hce.halomaps.org/index.cfm?fid=6005) has them. Those could add greater strategy for gameplay.

you know in my opinion you should stick with the original halo tagset. no new stuff. what i mean is every vehicle and weapon that you see in halo: CE. but do add the seraph and wasp and modify the others for speed to balance the distance out.
warthog = ghost rwarthog = ghost scorpion = wraith wasp = banshee longsword = seraph pelican = spirit
or at least make 2 versions. one classic as above and one with whatever you wanna add.

Uh... do you know how long it would take to get around the map with only those vehicles? It already takes a few minutes to get from one side of Extinction to the other with the Seraph or Jet at default speed, not to mention to get anywhere with the ghost or warthog or any of the other ground vehicles. Not to mention the fact that the wraith and banshee are slow enough as it is, and that the 'hogs, scorpion, longsword, and pelican are part of the original game.
Oh, yeah, speaking of the pelican, are you going to edit the tags so that it can actually fly up easily?

Uh... But still, that still leaves the issue of the fact that none of those vehicles are balanced for large-scale maps. He'd have to edit, say, the wraith's cannon from a mortar to something else, give the banshee something to replace the fuel rod cannon as a secondary (And probably replace the primary plasma bolts to something more effective too) make the ghost effective against anything outside the normal range of its plasma, etc., etc...

In the unlikely situation that Gonzo can fix that, they would be a brilliant strategic device, yes, but I doubt that it's possible. They're somehow worse than nuke spamming.

I will not be including them. My map is already quite large, and the additional tags I have will only add to probable lag, especially for low-end computers. Me, I built my own, so I have no concern. If I don't force VSYNC and 30 FPS, Halo starts doing all sorts of wild things. But not everyone has a high-end system, so I must take them into account. From what you've been saying, I'd like to include them to add something new and tactical. I JUST WISH I COULD FREAKING GET PAST THESE PORTALS.

Have you tried putting portals ONLY around the areas which use the most polies/triangles?
like if there is a certain building with alot of detail, we'd have only 4 portal-walls and they'd intersect at the edges of that building like a # sign covering the whole map.

So... why not take the portals used in coldsnap and scale them to the size of your map for testing purposes? And while on that note; will you be implementing the same teleporter used for the mythos (the seemingly universal teleporter) in this map? As for the tactical value involving the smoke grenades; i'm one of those crazy players who tends to empty everything i have in the direction of a smokescreen. Yes its a brilliant idea for CTF on the large scale because some defenders can toss a few down and cover a teleporter escape or just blind the enemy, but at the same time, what happens when youre already surrounded and the other team tosses one down? (my point being, you get blinded, then noobed like no ones business) what works to blind the enemy works perfectly for doing the same thing to you or your team. (my example here being the smoke grenade feature on the Heavy Scorpion in Airstrike; yes it could be used to cover your escape but if anyone is hunting you with a larger reticle than you (ie- the longsword, guass hog, rocket hog, bansee, ghost, sereph, ect) its pretty much pointless unless you are camping or know for sure no one is botting.

Anything wrong with this portal layout? It's just a basic layout to see if it works. Also, if it means anything, I can still only view non-collidable geometry. Unlike last time, however, which only showed poart of the non-collidable geometry, all of said geometry is visible. The collidable surfaces are in a different section of the scenario_structure_bsp file. This is apparently what my BSP looks like once it goes through tool. What. The. Hell. Tool only tells me it found some coplanar faces.

I've never had lag due to them on my server, nor anyone I play with. The only lag on celar exile is when you add in all vehicles at once. :O
