Why wouldn't I be in it for the joy? It's my primary motivator. I don't think I need to import someone else's portals (unless I simply cannot get mine working). I'll just see what to do to get past these errors.

I used a basic portal (12 portals, 9 subclusters, i.e. 4 planes)...the scenario compiled, but for some reason only some faces of particular IDs show up...specifically, only the non-collidable faces are rendering. Everything else that should be solid (like, I don't know, the map itself!) is for some reason not appearing. I don't think it's a portalling issue, as I can see the non-collidable faces just fine from various angles and distances. If it's any help, tool tells me there are 359 material groups, which sounds a bit high (I have 45 IDs). Also, as I move and pan the camera, I can see 'shimmers' of what appears to be the solid geometry. I have no clue what's going on here.

The good news is I got the scenario into Sapien, and I placed a Pelican to ensure I had the scale correct; it looks fine. If anyone has any idea what's going on here, I'll be that much closer to fixing this. In other news, my Max 8 license just expired...

Come on, Gonzo, don't give up on this. This is a hurdle, yeah, but just imagine how awesome it's going to be when your map takes the place of the best of the giant maps, and everyone is playing it instead of Extinction or Coldsnap.

I apologize for leading people into believing I would not finish this map. Short of some catastrophe (God forbid), I WILL finish this map. Of that have no doubt. I have already released the map to at least one individual for error help, and I may do so again.

If anyone knows why only my non-collidable geometry is appearing, please tell me. I also just realized that it's actually not all my non-collidables; only the red and blue lights, energy rope (as seen in b40) plus the red and blue base symbols are appearing. Even portions of the energy rope are not appearing, and surfaces marked as non-collidable but not transparent (i.e. metal panels generic used underneath vents/grates) are not there. There seems to be no consistency. Ideas?

I'm going to use a BSP importer to see what got into the map. Tool reports an appropriate amount of vertices and faces upon scenario construction.

Maybe. I tried importing the OBJ of my BSP into gmax, and using one importer, gmax decided to shut down randomly. Using another one, I got some BS error. I'm installing Max 2012 (for which I have a student license) to see if I can use its importer support. Otherwise, I'll try reportalling, but now that my Max 8 license is out, I'm not sure if I can get an error-free export.

one thing i wanna ask before you do that. Did you do radiosity on the map? just asking because what you described seems like there is no lighting. oh and the render only things under the grates need to be collide-able because portals don't show things that are completely behind the map surfaces seeing as they're not gonna be seen anyways.

No, the UVW's are awful in many areas, but that can't be the issue here. If it were, why do the lights show up, which all have good UVW's, and not other faces with good UVW's? I'm going to look at making more portals: my test only had 4 planes and thus 12 portal zones. My first attempt had over 200 portal zones, so I suspect (after reading other portalling posts) I had too many in my first go and too few in my test. That said, I'll try a more intermediate sum and maybe toss in some exact portals as well. If that fails, I'll try exact portals only.

Let it be known that no portals causes an error. It is very ambiguous, simply failing to create the map because of sub cluster allocation (I think). Some portals leads to compilation (except when I had too many) but missing geometry. This is most perplexing.

Grunts, I'll try and contact you via xfire soon if my portalling fails. Thanks for your offer.

Let me go ahead and leave a few updates: Maniac1000 has offered to create a ground bitmap for me since I am preoccupied and would probably fail at it anyway (never really tried). I've also got iPuke (if you've played Halo PC, you've likely run into him. He's killer with the Magnum, and not in the usual three-shot doom sense. I mean sheer pwnage) working on a cliff bitmap. iPuke is currently enrolled in Adobe courses, so I feel he's got talent untapped here.

It's also nearing time for tagging, but that really won't get into full swing until the Beta comes out. Because of the large volume of tags and high expectations I have for them, I am willing to accept suggestions/actual tags (with descriptions) if anyone feels like it. In the end, however, I will be personally combing through all tags to ensure they meet my criteria. I'll also be tagging things myself, but in the interests of time I decided to go ahead and take ideas.

I haven't forgotten the desire for a waterfall, either. Once portalling is complete enough to the point where my map is actually visible, I'll get one in there. Then the level design should be complete. This map WILL be released, mark my words. It needs a new name since SeL released his map first (looks sexy but too dark, by the way), though. Do not abandon hope!

oddly enough these were the only tags i couldn't identify from memory from either using them, commenting on them or, personally working on them. I would appreciate it if anyone could possibly post pictures of these tags in use on the links provided or a small description of what each does.

Meanwhile i'll add my own vehicle request that comes directly from Matooba's insane mind "Hogfoot":a monster truck variant of everyone's favorite vehicle (minus the gun turret). This particular vehicle was only featured in its incomplete form in Hoggulch where it had physics issues involving tipping. Personally, i think this monster needs a map of this size just to make it a viable resource (that and the thing is extremely fun to drive).

Concerning the name, I think you should take Bungie's approach:

1) Base the map name on what's in it, often incorporating wordplay

2) If a remake make the name a variation of the original

3) If a remake have the name sound like the original's phonetically.


Since it's a spiritual remake of Extinction why not work from that.
Associated words: Eradication, Genocide, Decimation, Wipe out, Endangered, Xenocide, Apocalypse, Armageddon, End, Termination, Destruction, Purge, Cleanse

The four Horsemen of the apocalypse ( Pestilence, War, Famine, and Death) come from the book of Revelation no 's.'

I personally like Genocide, Xenocide, and Eradication.

I think you should let the author put the tags and give the name he wants for this map.

Also advancebo's wraith cant aim right and is unusable on big distances.

I can update it to be accurate tho, but i'm way too lazy

Does anyone know of someone who knows enough about portalling to take this on, or at the least coach me on it? e: Forgot this was a giant map, your portalling issues are probably caused just becuase of that sole fact.

On a side note, what is the map like (desert, snow, grassy?), this can help you choose a name in which its based on what the map is like.

(has hippo and hornet, but is working mostly i am not sure if you will have problems the only things that are incomplete on these are the turret moving and secondary weapons unless there are different ones, but i can't remember, but i know the weapons work.)

Brain cannot handle. Going into shutdown.

I personally like Xenocide, since Xenocide is the eradication of an alien species. Since the covenant want to eradicate the humans, and the humans pretty much vice versa, I think it would fit in.

Looking at it now, after those awesome names, Requiem kinda doesn't fit. I think Xenocide is the best.

If you're implying that I was hating on the map, I must correct you. I love this map and can't wait to play it. I was merely stating that it is in fact a canyon in the middle of nowhere, as is pretty much every canyon map. :P

E: And LoS, your brain could have a sleep timer so it automatically goes into shutdown whether it's found or not.

No he thought I was hating it because I said "I think we should call it 'Another box canyon with no way in or out and has absolutely no tactical value' " referencing RvB S1E1 where they talk about the uselessness of BG. AFAIK no hating on the map was happening.

Jaz, that would be a useful feature. Five minutes without finding the body, go into power-saving shutdown.

Btw, if Requiem is a canyon in the middle of nowwher, it has no tactical value. That doens't mean it can't be fun, though.

Oh, sorry, Skidrow. My bad. I didn't catch the quote. Nice reference, but a little long for the map name.

Qwerty, if you'll simply read a bit on page 32, you'll see I mentioned that SeL beat me and took my name. As per rules of engagement, I'll be renaming it. The name has not been decided.

The tag ideas will be examined. Only quality assets will make it into the map. Quality here means good looking, practical, not too redundant, and if the tag data itself isn't up to my specs, it should be relatively simple to fix.

How about - as a placeholder - use CMT's SPV2 tags? They're great quality, nicely balanced and very practical for many scenarios. Sadly, they may be redundant.
