OK, so I used to know how to do this, but I forgot because it's been years since I made a map. ...So, when you have a plane you want to cut, say, a circle shape into... You make the circle (cylinder) to cut into the plane, stick it inside to make the hole.... ...and now what? How do I make it so that the shape put inside the face cuts a hole the same shape into it? I remember seeing it somewhere, but can someone refresh me on this? Thanks

Ok on the plane go to the create tab and in the dropdown box click compound objects click boolean then click pick operand b and select the cylinder. Experiment with different objects in the Operation Group Box and when your satisfied convert it back to mesh/poly.

Avoid using that too if you can, halo doesn't seem to like it.

If by "know what you are doing" you mean picking off the open edges manually, then yes. But that's just stupid and takes more time then it's worth.

WTF bump. Anyway, you can't have it both ways. The hard way is to delete and create a jillion faces. The FAST way is to model correctly and then boolean. Yeah, you'll have to weld a few edges, but at least you get a cut line. Trust me, I've done this.

I haven't been on the forums a while, I've been using max for more productive things of late. Anyways, complicated geometry will have "a jillion faces" if you Boolean it. End of story. If you're good, you'll realize Boolean is for noobs and it's not that difficult to do it manually. Hotkey "make face (polly)", "Split" and "Bridge". Minimize the use of the mouse and you'll have better results fast.
Halo is max on easy mode. Try Fable II's style... not so easy. It's nice not having to follow the stupid BSP rules though.

But that's not what makes it slow; It's the constant clicking verts that sucks. Might as well use editable mesh's fast target welding so you can quickly weld up that boolean. Boolean is for everyone. And if you made a sealed world to begin with, boolean is pretty accurate.

I am going to have to go with muffin on this. The only part of boolean that is usefull is the subtract feature. (unless you are using anything above max 8, proboolean is actually vastly improved)

Subtract is the most useful, but you may need union for some things. Pro boolean is great, but it's PRO.
