Hey, um, I haven't been able to find any tutorials on map lighting in particular. Can anyone point me to resources that explain things like indoor lighting and placing lights for a map that I am making?
Thanks :)

Though I haven't messed with this directly, from my understanding, lights are added by either shaders on the BSP or device light things. Radiosity will automatically make the area lighter around these objects / shaders.

Some maps have pretty even indoor lighting. So is there a way to scale up the default brightness for unlit areas, so that I can have all of the map lit to some degree?

It's defiantly difficult, I try to do all the calculating in max (render to texture). Though the result is much better, it's not performance wise. Takes more time as well.

Render to texture should be in the "Rendering" drop down menu. You should be able to figure it out, just add the objects to the list and set a file to save the render.
