Hello there, I need your help for a little problem I've been trying to solve over the last few days. All my attempts and all the people I asked about had no idea how to over come this.

Basically, I have geometry, notably underground caves, that are way below the water level. Problem is, Fog works with planes ( $ symbol) and thus, I can't make it ''Volumetric''. Applying fog to that ocean of mine therefore makes the area below look like it's underwater.

If anyone can help solving this, I'm really out of ideas.

I am not sure if i understand this correctly, but i am leaning toward an answer like, everything below waterlevel is filled with water, unless you have some type of airlock.
Is that what you are doing?

Use exact portals or normal portals. Then when it's ingame, open the BSP tag and set the fog from 1 to 0 in that portal.

Chrisk, how do I know which portal is which and how will the game know which fog to use? since fogs aren't referenced by numbers like BSPs are, since I have only one I guess it would work but still, is it something you already tryed?

could you explain this in more detail, particularly "ingame". So far i haven't found a solution for this, only that anything above/below the fog plane will have fog, even with portals

Actually, What I believe his solution will do is enable atmospheric fog which is set by the sky tag. This or use the only fog in my palette... Either way I can't test before I have a steady build.

And here's the result: 03.11.10 12:21:30 EXCEPTION halt in \halopc\haloce\source\tag_files\tag_groups.c,#3157: #1 is not a valid structure_bsp_fog_region_block index in [#0,#1)

Sorry, I meant in-sapien. Basicly, you need to open the BSP tag and find out what cluster the tunnel or underground area is and disable the fog there. (by changing the 1 to a 0)

There was a good post about it somewhere around here.

The BSP tag or the scenario?

I'm not sure you understood the problem. I'll make a drawing to help out

Light Blue is the Water plane
Dark blue is where I want fog
Yellow is where there will be fog, including the brown area that's below water level and that I need to take off so that this cave that's underground is Not considered underwater

I'm speaking from experience, although Chrisk seems to have a good idea, his is worth trying although I don't think it will work..

It will work, Bungie did it on c10. In Halo, fog is everywhere or nowhere. If you assign a cluster (portal) to have a fog plane in it, the fog will show up when your standing in that cluster, but if you move to the next cluster that doesn't have fog assigned to it, you will see no fog. Even in the area that has fog assigned to it.

Long story short: If you want to do this, make sure you can't see the tunnel directly from an area that has a fog plane.

And it's in the BSP tag.

B30 did it by using different bsp's. Easiest solution would be to do the same.

What about Newbkilla's (or was it Killa_FTW's) map? Didn't it go under water? The one with the island and massive cliff with a beach and junk.

killa's map didn't go underwater. He was able to fake it by using teleporters and tinting the windows. The maP was delta cliffs.

That's what I thought. Then I believe it's not something that's been done before and all testing done so far was unhelpful towards this. Unless someone has better I guess it'll have to stay without fog.

Put it somewhere in the sky, hidden from sight, and put a teleporter by the water's edge. Then make the inside of the teleporter look like what's actually on the other side, up in the sky. Nobody would notice...... Lol. Of course, the teleporter would have to be shaped like the cave entrance.

Do you even know what portals in halo are? Not teleporters.

Apparently we have new people who don’t know and a number of veterans who seem to have forgotten the proper etiquette for posting in the forum. Listed below are some of the important guidelines for posting in web forums. Please take the time and review them.

I will be holding people to these guidelines and deleting or editing messages that do not conform. Repeated offenses will result in your posting privileges being revoked.

  • Read the forums rules and guidelines before posting for the first time.

  • Search the other posts to see if your topic is already covered.

  • Use a meaningful titles for your threads. Don't use titles like “HELP” or “hlp plz” be clear in the title of the thread as to what it is about.

  • Be civil. Personal differences should be handled through email or IM and not through posts displayed to everyone. Do not make personal attacks or call someone names.

  • Do Not troll which means do not post messages specifically designed to start arguments or controversy.

  • Do not chastise newbies. Do not make fun of people who know less than you about the subject. Help them or remain silent

  • Do not abuse or harasses people who make map or tag requests. If someone makes a request you have two options. Help them and/or discuss the request with them to clarify what they want, or if you don’t want to help them then remain silent and do not post.

  • Stay on the topic of the thread.

  • Ignore spammers, do not respond to them do not post in response to their offence your responses are worse than the spam itself because their account and all their messages can be deleted with a single click. Your responses can't unless I delete all your messages. Your responses to spam is worse than the spam itself.

  • In order to be understood by most people, use correct spelling, grammar and avoid slang unless you know the word or phrase will be understood by other members. Not everyone uses "netspeak" or the newest terms so be consice.

  • Do not post lines of repeated characters such as “HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA” it is not funny does not convey any real emphasis and unnecessarily stretches the screen making it harder for others to read.

  • Act in a give and take manner; help others as often as or more than you ask for help.

  • Do not use all caps or SHOUT in your posts. In addition, one exclamation point is enough.

  • When replying to a post, do not quote more from the previous post than you absolutely have to. It is not always necessary to quote the pictures.

  • Do not post new problems on someone else's thread and interrupt a topic of discussion.

  • Do not use someone else’s thread for a private conversation.

  • Most forums prohibit warez, cracks or illegal downloading of software and similar topics. This is in the rules and is not allowed here.

  • Watch your sense of humor, posts may be read by people from a variety of backgrounds and ages. What you think is funny may seem mean and hurtful to others.

  • Do not post unnecessary images or spam a topic with rude and mean spirited images telling someone that the topic has “failed”.

  • Do not post any information that you want private. Posts should not contain personal, identifiable information or content embarrassing to others.

  • Do not post ”empty” or useless responses, such as just ”lol” or ”cool.” Only post responses when you have something meaningful to contribute.

  • Write concisely and do not ramble. Use punctuation and sentence or paragraphs breaks to make it easier for others to read.

  • Do not criticize or make fun of people who do not write concisely or use proper punctuation. Ask politely for clarification or do not post at all.

  • Do not use words like ”urgent” or ”important” or “HELP” in your subject line, be patient.

  • Think before you post. Do not post in haste or anger, wait before posting - the message will still be there - cool down and think before you respond.

Opsy, if you look at insomnia... the secret room is below the map's sky water level thing. maybe that can be used as an example to your research to fix this problem. (no, i went in the secret room, looked around. enjoyed. and left.)
