I doubt this is possible but having just recently started playing borderlands I had found I loved the textures but then noticed that they were actually really low grade. What I liked about them was that they look very cartoony yet real with the black outlines around them. Does anyone know if this black outline around objects could be accomplished?

Yeah, but push is easier, and will have less errors.

You wouldn't go and make the textures that bad though. The ghost there is really just blurred and the texture you would use wouldn't be blurred, just decreased in size.

It's more of an art style, not ugly. What I like about it most is that it keeps that "look" no matter what way you're facing or looking at it.

I love borderlands
I love Cell-Shading
and I love the idea of having it in Halo, i made a thread about it not to long ago,
There is a blood gulch cell-shaded on halomaps somewhere, just search it.

The cel-shaded bloodgulch doesn't seem actually cel-shaded. nothing has a black outline, and it just looks like he made all the detail black, which looks quite disgusting tbh.

Can't the detail be retained a little? Borderlands has detail it's just low quality. These things maps on the videos are just like VERY low color quality and zero detail.

There's two models. One is slightly extruded from the original, the faces are flipped and colored in black to give it the outline. hth

so all you're getting is a backface on the extra model. Cool! Makes sense. I may try and make a map like this one of these days.
BTW I am playing around with this and when I use the "push" modifier I get a model that contracts side to side and expands up and down. Why is this? Edited by eliteslasher on Jan 6, 2010 at 09:08 PM

I suggest just extruding the second model by local or normal or w/e it is.

You should make a tutorial on it, so modeling impaired members can find out how. Like myself lol

That map isn't really cell shaded. Just changed to crappy textures and the black lines are built in and are only in a few spots. BTW I started playing with some shiz and this is what I got out of a model I made when I first started mapping. I took the original texture and used the "poster edges" filter. Well, yeah, the textures are kind of bad, but Cel-Shading relies heavily on exaggerated lines in terms of their thickness and design (straight, jagged a bit, etc).

I think I understand this all now. Here's a little test of mine. I tried making some borderlands style textures too using regular textures and playing around with the "poster edges" filter like i stated before. While on the topic of borderlands, I was thinking. One of my favorite things to do is blow up barrels to kill people. I want to make some exploding barrels for the mapping clan I am in but I am not really a tagger. I've been wanting to try my hand at this. Can anyone recommend a good tutorial for exploding scenery? Edited by eliteslasher on Jan 7, 2010 at 05:23 AM

Do you have xfire? I can send you a scenery to play around with. My xfire is 4rb1t0r.

Cel shading is usually part of the rendering engine, and since we can't change halo's rendering engine, you have to fake it. You can fake the black outline using the method of duplicating the mesh and flipping normals, but that's not practical for ingame use. You can do it in the textures, but its will always look the same from every angle. That's probably the best way to do it though.
There is also the Ink n' Paint shader in 3ds max, so you could try to find a way to use that using render to texture, but it still wouldn't look like the real thing.

Borderlands doesn't really use that kind of shading though. It uses the black outline but the bitmaps seem to me to just be crappy and that is it. Not like normal cell shading. IDK why, but I think it looks good though even with pixely textures.

The shell shading done in the videos makes the maps look like cartoons why is that cool?
