No one ever follows that rule.

That is not a rule but it is a recommendation. The reason I recommend it is that until you fully understand the ramifications or potential issues of exposing your information you should NOT be giving it away.

I have often referred to the “illusion of anonymity” of people using the internet and this is exactly what I mean. As has been discussed in this thread it is relatively easy to identify people especially when they use social networking services like facebook or myspace. Those types of services don’t work unless you give out personally identifiable information so when you use them you give up your privacy in favor of the benefits of the service. What you have to decide, and I am sure most never give it a single thought, is what are the trade-offs and potential downfalls of giving away that information.

When people apply for jobs here we not only look at their resume’s but look for their profiles on-line in places like myspace, linkedin and facebook to see what type of person they are. More often that not we find drunken and or embarrassing pictures of them or tales of their pot induced exploits at college and such. Funny for sure but not exactly what an employer is looking for.

I objected to the use of halomaps.org as a facebook group name because as the owner of that domain/IP (Intellectual Property) I did not want it to be associated with anything that collects or exposes personal information about the people and minors who visit this website. Facebook is specifically designed to expose personal information.

It is relatively easy for people to find me; just look for UXB Internet and you can know all about my on-line presence where I work and even the phone number. But that presence has been consciously crafted to give out information that is or can be beneficial for me and my business. I have weighed the benefits and pitfalls of all the information I expose to the public. Most of you don’t even think about the concept much less the act which is why I tell people to not post private information in this very public web forum.

is that going to be for mods separate from Halomaps, or a place halomaps people can talk, I hope the second one, because I don't want to have 2 HALO DOWNLOAD WEBSITES!

First of all Jesus is not a modder so leave him out of this. Second this argument needs to end. Yes masters is right but im not going to worry about some 14 - 16 year old finding out where i live. Having a face book page is just for fun. No raping involved. I am 20 and have no problem saying that my name is josh howard. If it comes to it i am pretty sure i can defend myself against a 16 year old. But thats not the point so quit arguing.

No, but getting a hold of private information like your name and were you live is a bigger problem.

Not everyone who has access to this forum is under 16, benevolent and of pure motives. There are a lot of scary people in the world with evil intents. I am not saying you should be paranoid but until you fully understand the possible ramifications you should err on the side of caution.

I agree with you there Dennis but, as i said earlier, by even joining a group on facebook you are posed with the SAME risk. People can see your name on there too so there is no difference. Even if you mark yourself as a fan of something it is almost the same thing too.

I'm just saying, do what you want, but don't try and put this idea down.

Ah yes, the eternal website war. Modacity vs. Halomaps.
While I started out on Halomaps 2 1/2 years ago, I moved to Modacity (then known as H2V) 2 years ago, learned a BUNCH of technical stuff, and haven't really looked back.

The way I see it is that Halomaps is a place to get started. You get your bearings in Halomaps, learn the ins and outs of the HEK. But when you want to get into more complex things, you move to Modacity.

Kid's a bit angry at Modacity because he did something which was a bit immature (Sorry Kid, it hurts, but it's true), in addition to him believing that all the members of Modacity hate him because they don't share the same viewpoints on subjects. Masterz is angry at Modacity because he was a dick to everyone there (again, sorry, but it's true) and got banned.
Most of the pricks at Modacity have been banned. The ones who are still there won't be there for much longer.
The only one widely considered a "prick" who is still at Modacity is SnaFuBAR, and that's because while he offers good crit on models, he tends to do so in a harsh way.

The reason why Modacity is hostile towards Halomaps is because of the maturity level present here. I only need to look at 1 or 2 threads before I see some 4chan meme pop up or someone whose posting style is illegible. Modacity has a zero-tolerance policy on illegible posts if it continues to be an issue for a member, and a fifteen-strikes rule on retarded internet memes.
Halomaps members are frowned upon at Modacity because they tend to lash out at criticism or take things the wrong way because someone doesn't share their viewpoint and they get -repped. The maturity level is (mostly) much higher at Modacity due to their policies, and it stays that way out of the "aura of fear" of sorts that the members there generate.

Honestly, most of the people there are nice people; just don't act like an idiot and you'll be fine.
P0lar_bear is probably the harshest admin you'll come across there (SnaFuBAR is probably the harshest and most unforgiving mod), but he (and Snaf) really is a nice guy, he just has to enforce the rules.

E: And yes, English Mobster is NOT my primary account (common knowledge to most people on Modacity). Yes, I do have a primary account here. Yes, I used to be a LOT more active/helpful here, and had one of the highest post counts before Dennis took the postcount away.
I'll give you a hint: I created the FIRST gallery thread on these forums (which Dennis accidentally deleted and then made the new ones you see today).

I see 4chan meme's pop up more frequently at modacity than here, probably since the general age is older at modacity.

Half of the people's avatars here are Pedobear (yes, I am exaggerating, but still).
If ONE newbie at Modacity had that as their avatar, they would be shot on sight for the most part. People who do use the memes either are respected members of the community and know when it is appropriate to use them or idiots who will be banned soon enough.

E: To answer the question which I know is going to be brought up: The SWMT is on hold at the moment. I actually HAVE been working on things, I've been rearranging the tags so that SWMT has its own dedicated folder. It's a lot of menial and brainless work, as I have to change each individual tag.
This is only complicated further by me not being able to get into contact with Advancebo and Nexus as often as I should.
I'm actually honestly surprised you got that, good job.

I'd really appreciate it if people would stop it with the Halomaps vs. Modacity WHICH IS BETTER war bullcrap. I'm sick of the dramafests that spawn from it, at least when I'm at Modacity I can clean it up and tell people to cut the crap.

Harshest? Puh-lease, I'm a huge softie. I'm more than willing to give people the benefit of the doubt or a second chance to people much to the chagrin of the rest of the staff. However, I'm the most active admin, and thus I'm often making the disciplinary decisions the most out of us three.

The culture gap between Modacity and Forum.Halomaps is simply overall maturity. I'm not saying we're 100% serious business, obviously that would be a lie. We prefer our members to conduct themselves in a certain manner, where the posts are somewhat thought out and written in at least 7th grade-level English. If you're going to act out, at least be funny or 100% true while doing it. If you're going to meme, do it right.

Most of us have been with the Halo modding community since the beginning (not me, I came in late), and actually grew up out of our retarded teenage selves with it (though I did that). We wanted a community where, after putting up with so many posts that were flat-out retarded and spelled as if the author had a seizure writing it, we wouldn't have to deal with it anymore.

So yeah, we're a bit elitist. Deal with it. Though we're not perfect. If you want to learn how to take modding to the next level, past simple mods, and learn how to make things and make them right, give us a try, but please, lurk for a while before you do so you know who's who and how things work.

If you don't think you'd fit in at all or get along with people, then don't join us, but please, be courteous and don't run around saying that we're horrible people because you disagree with us.

And if you have been there before, and have been banned or shunned or whatever for it, and don't want to let it go, then by all means, please...
