Okay.. well.. umm are you sure it said cache file succesfully built? If it did, I think if you are on vista, turn off the UAC, well actually wait till dennis logs on and tells you how to do it, because he will get mad, if I tell you to turn off the entire UAC, if you do, you have a higher risk for getting spyware viruses, and your security is lower. Nothing will happen for now, go ahead and see if that works, so turn off the UAC, and then build it again, and then see if it is there.

If it says something along these lines: successfully built cache file. Cache pack file bitmaps hits: 786 for 41.99M Cache pack file bitmaps adds/misses: 232 for 29.71M Cache pack file sounds hits: 650 for 14.58M Cache pack file sounds adds/misses: 40 for 2.81M Cache pack file loc hits: 98 for 0.19M Cache pack file loc adds/misses: 6 for 0.03M C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Halo Custom Edition> Then it should automatically be put in your \maps subdirectory.

Turn on Vistas secret admins account.
Open CMD, Run as Administrator. Type in "net user administrator /active:yes" without the quotes.
Log out and log into the admins account, and try compiling from there.
Note: UAC is still active in this, but not as much as reg. Accounts Edited by Greenfuzz on Sep 17, 2009 at 09:28 PM

Just for my own information. With Vista, there is a problem viewing in explorer some files? And some files can only bee seen by using a program that is capable of opening it? true or false?

Basically, just run the cmd.exe that you are using to build-cache-file as an administrator (create a shortcut for it, right-click that shorcut and "run as administrator") DON'T turn off UAC, that is the most dumbest thing to do on a vista comp, and it is there for your protection. Basically, if you are running a program as admin using my method, and create a new file, then you can view that file normally like any other file. But, if you are not running a program as admin using my method, and create a new file, then you can't view that file when another program you use to view that file is not running as admin, and you wouldn't be able to view that file unless you run as admin with the program.
hope this helps. Edited by sargejohnson on Sep 18, 2009 at 03:26 AM

dont know how to explain better. It all has to do with the now default security model in windows. The default is to run as a standard user and NOT as an administrator. This security model can also be setup in XP but it is not the default and most don't understand the ramifications of the various security contexts or know how to set it up so when they switch to Vista they are confused by it. Very simply, when you run as a standard user you do not have privileges to write, append or modify to the \Program Files or system files directory. Nor does any program you run in that security context. Since in the normal course of use there is no reason to write to those directories this then prevents malware or virus from making changes to the protected system files since any program trying to write or modify to those areas will initiate the UAC which gives you warning and lets you deny access. Disabling the UAC essentially removes any impediment from malware and virus and lets you run as an administrator with full unfettered access to the system. This is very bad! The problem that occurs is that some older programs like Halo CE and the editing kit all work in the \Program Files directory and Vista balks at it because those folders are protected from writing. There are several ways around it but turning off the UAC is the absolutely 100% undeniably inarguably the WRONG way to solve the problem. You can run the individual program as administrator to give it privileges to write to the “\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Halo Custom Edition” folder or you can change the security for JUST that folder to allow access to all programs. There are pros and cons to both options but since you normally know what you are doing in those folders it is easier to just add your user account to the “\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Halo Custom Edition” security list and give it full rights to JUST THAT folder. Never, Never, Never turn off the UAC.
