1: So here I have the halo 3 beta spartan diffuse texture and the normal map opened in photo shop

Keeps putting url tags on it...
--------------------------------------------------
2: I would change size of the diffuse bitmap so that it matches the size of the normal map. In this case, 768x768

--------------------------------------------------
3: I would select the BLUE channel of the normal map and hit ctrl+c to copy it.

--------------------------------------------------
4: Then I would paste it over the diffuse texture with the Multiply blending property.

--------------------------------------------------
5: Press ctrl+L and change the levels until you get the desired effect.

--------------------------------------------------
6: Before...

--------------------------------------------------
7: After

halomaps messes up the image links when I link to a site that has case sensitive urls so go here instead.

There is much else to do after this(edit the multipurpose map, shaders, etc) I'll add later.
in b4 spartan094 aka BP

And now a little explanation. Normal maps store information on the tangets, normals, and bi-normals of a high poly object. This image explains a lot.

So using the red or green channel of a normal map to fake bump would be useless and only show up as pre-defined light.

they're fake bumps. they appear to be bumped but its just the texture. Real bumps manipulate light dynamically or something.

Thats because your just using the blue channel. To give a heightened effect.

That is the point of fake bumping... But some people use the red and green channel of a normal map for some stupid reason.

Idk what the point of bump map because the bumpmap bungie made doen't make the texture shine so much because of the blue rainbow thing but the best way to bump map the texture to shine good is black and white :) check out my xfire screenshot

and so much more I have more screenshot of them in here
Click this link below lol
