Your textures are HORRIBLE. Heres one I made just to show you how yours should look when rendered. Really, I wouldn't even give the textures a 2. But don't let that discourage you. Work hard and if your a natural born painter/drawer, youll do fine. Edited by D4NO on Jan 7, 2008 at 04:29 AM

i would like to think im good at painting/drawing im not the worst i like modeling with clay but found i love computers and learnt how to take my computer to bits and then fix it i was learning how to make viruses and weird stuff but gave up on that because its not exactly a good hobby :) so i put my favorite things together and came up with making models and textures for games and i love running which is why im rated one of the best and will be running for my countys tomorrow so wish me luck (because iv been injured for 3 weeks) i will also be learning c++ in the near future (summer holidays) thats if i get my new laptop. i would really like to learn how to make awesome textures so if some on could teach me or point me to some tuts i would really be in your debt. thanks alot i have put some goals for me to get for the end of this year and would like you to help me get there.

its nothing special... you've got the right idea, you just make a symmetrical forunnerish thingy, but don't make it colourful... or kinda kills it.... heres what I made with the tutorial: nothing really special... but it was my first ever texture...... although, making textures isn't really my thing, I like making skins more, and sexy designs in photoshop:

Dane told me this so i'm just going to go by what he said. In a texture don't use a mixture of 30 degree angles and 45 degree. You either pick one or the other. Don't mix them together or you get those odd shapes as you can see from your texture as a great example.

Sorry everyone, but the only way to be a good texture artist is to be a good painter. 50 percent of the texturing I do is design and shapes, the other 50 percent is painting. I barely use any filters for the colour and detail layers. It's all different layers and different colours, changing the palette frequently, and painting on separate layers with alot of fine details. I, nor anyone else can teach you how to paint. Thats like trying to teach someone how to think. You've either got it, or you don't. Sorry. That is a photoshop render, using photoshops Lighting Effects filter. This I finished just a day ago, and I used no filters in the creation of all the texture maps. The only filter I used was the lighting effects one to render that image right there. That is not the actual texture. Not like theres 1 texture. Theres a whole ****load involved. These are the steps in VERY general and breif detail. First I painted the greyscale bump/height map, all the runes and the figures of Osiris, Anubis and Amun Re as a darker shade of grey then the background layer, and then I painted on top of those, on a seperate layer, all the scratches and fissures along the surface. I saved that as a bump map, then started a new texture, copied the bump map layers across to this new one, then applied some layer blends and inner outer glow effects to the shapes I made, then on top, I painted all the layers to give colour. 1 big layer that gave the main sandstone/papyrus look, and then another layer for all the coloured glyphs and the figures. Once I completed the colour layers, I overlayed rhem onto the bump map, lowered the contrast on the bump map, and I got a near perfect egyptian wall diffuse. I then ran them both through Crazy Bump to produce a normal map, an ambient occlusion map, and a coloured specular. It renders like this: So, as you can see, it is essential to be a good painter if you want to paint textures. Though, don't let any of what I've said sway you. Here is my first texture: Laffle, what a piece of ****. Pretty good though, for being my first, and not knowing any of Photoshop's tools other than the paintbrush and the colour changer. I was more used to drawing in sketchbooks with pencil. Mouse was hard enough, not knowing any of the tools didn't exactly help. 1 year later. After I learned to accept the mouse and be its friend, I became very skilled with the PS tools, and applied my steady hand and gathered knowledge from my life of drawing to produce much better quality stuff today. And here is a render of my best: Just wait until I get a tablet. I'll be painting about 6 times better than that, and about 3 - 4 times faster. Dam mouse and it's limits. Oh my GOD, that thing is TERRIBLE.
TOO MUCH MIRRORING OF PHOTOSOURCE MAKES DANO CRY.
Don't take it to heart buddy, you'll come to realize I'm quite blunt. Though, lying never ever helped anyone.
Oh and I can't help you with making metal textures, sorry. I make mine from custom brushes I made, and lots of patience. I actually got a real life canvas, painted and smeared all sorts of crap all over it, threw dirt on it and took a photo, edited the photo and turn it into a grunge brush.
If that helps. Edited by D4NO on Jan 8, 2008 at 09:20 AM
