I'm not sure Martin O'Donell and Michael Salvatori can be matched. Anyway, there is a wealth of music to choose from (Halo 1, 2, 3 and Reach... lets not include Halo 4's poor attempt at halo music.)

Halo 4 had an excellent soundtrack which blended well with the style of the campaign. The whole game was not trying to exactly replicate the formula from Halo 1-3 and should not be discredited for doing so.

^ yes that is true... but in a way it still didn't have that halo feel to me. if i don't judge it by the standards of a halo game its a damn good game. but comparing it to the original trilogy+ reach and odst it plain sucks. bungie set the bar high with the older games and 343 didn't quite reach it imo (not to mention that they didnt have marty doing music )

Halo 4 is byfar one of the better entries in the series, and the most ambitious since H2. I'll play it any day over Reach or H2. And for whatever faults in the story, it actually has a story unlike H3, Reach, ODST. Hell, SPOPS as bad as it was had a better story than those 3.
There is no Launch Day in POA. SPV3 POA is built off of the old SPV2 one as a base, where everything was already removed and stripped. Plus we are out of object names for POA now as well, making it highly unlikely that the cutscene will ever be returned. Edited by Masters1337 on Aug 4, 2014 at 12:13 PM

Well, that's arguable... 3, ODST and Reach had great stories (in my opinion). Halo 4 relied way too much on Greg Bear's books to provide backstory explanation, and was actually pretty weak when observed by itself. I did read the books and I enjoyed the H4 campaign, though. I suppose you could argue that ODST and Reach had "irrelevant" plots, but they well told and enjoyable to watch/play. I'm not even sure what's so wrong with 3, I thought that campaign was amazing. As for Spartan Ops... Sarah Palmer ruins that story for me. Worst character in the Halo series, and you have to listen to her all the time while playing and watch her during the cutscenes. It's unbearable.

It's unbearable. My problem with those three is that nothing really happens in H3, ODST, and Reach. H3 effectively ends with "The Covenant" and the story pretty much is "wander around earth till you get to the ark for 2 missions, then epilogue to tie up other unrelated loose ends", while reach is just running around the planet until you get a mission to deliver a package to the POA, and then ODST is just about finding your squad and escorting the engineer. There is no ultimate goal, mystery, conflict, surprises character development, or discovery through the majority of those campaigns. H4 should have had the terminals as part of the game, and not something you had to exit to see. I never read the books until after the game was out, and even then I read only the last one. I loved the mystery and discovery of things on Requiem and being united with humanity again, as well as finding out what has happened while you were asleep for 4 years. I felt with the exception of the pelican mission, every mission moved the story forward and held my interest. Palmer is an annoying character, but there are lots of highlights in SPOPS as well, namely Jul M'dama and Halsey. Roland is also pretty entertaining both ingame and in the cutscenes. You can oversimplify Halo 4 like that, as well. All that happens in Halo 4 is you run around requiem pushing buttons, then you teleport a couple of times, then the game ends with a quicktime event to no real resolution (Didact obviously survived, we knew it even back then). Halo is like the Elder Scrolls series. Each game is pretty weak when it comes to story, especially in the character development department, but the solid gameplay and overall lore of the franchise as a whole is what keeps people interested in the fiction. Is this okay? Hell no, they need to get some actual writers who are good at writing smaller external and internal conflicts, character development, better scripts, and believable characters/character relationships (maybe they should get ahold of The writers of The Last of Us :P ), while leaving the lore and larger scale events to the other guys. It also wouldn't hurt for them to not give us such a narrow look at the universe during the games. Halo 2 was a good start, showing us a lot of different characters and a look the whole covenant society. It would be great to see a lot more side characters and different campaign branches that tell stories from different perspectives, factions, and locations all the while introducing different main/side characters for each segment, developing all the characters progressively, and give them roles in the overall main conflict. It'd also be good if they could show us more of the psychological effects of a 30 year war that claimed the lives of millions. Not once have we seen an actual psychopathic character in Halo. Not once have we seen a character so broken by the reality of war and losing everything, and knowing there was nothing he could do to save the lives of the people around him that he puts a magnum to his head and contemplates suicide nearly every night. We also have never seen elites that seem disgusted and angry that they were lied to for decades and tricked into fighting a brutal war only to have their leaders turn on them, slaughter large amounts of their population, and then cast out from their own society. Not once has a character in Halo given a speech or monologue that pulled at the emotional heartstrings and/or pumped us up for the game (unless you were a fan of Johnson's halo 1 hangar speech, but IMO that was a pretty weak monologue). Halo should have these sorts of characters and moments. It should have better story. But that will likely never happen in a halo game. And unless it does, there's no reason to compare the game's stories to each other.
In short, don't try to compare games' stories when they are all very weak in the story department. Let's be honest, it's more entertaining reading the lore of the series than it would be experiencing these stories without gameplay. And it's good that the lore is great, it makes the universe feel solid and real. And Halo's excellently solid gameplay is what keeps us coming back. But it doesn't change my point.

Halo 1 has a simple story but the world-building is fantastic.
Halo 2 is a mess.
Halo 3's story is okay, but most of it feels like filler and the conclusions to both the Covenant and the Flood are unsatisfying.
ODST is a bit lacking, but it's easily carried by its great cast of characters.
Halo Wars is campy fun.
Reach has easily the worst story and characters and it's full of nonsense.
Halo 4 is dumb.

Halo 4 is dumb. H1: agree, awesome title, fun to explore H2: messy, but took the "mystery" of halo to a whole other level h3: easily my least favorite, felt like a rushed cleanup of the mess they made of halo 2, but introduced very cool lighting effects. odst: a pov from non chief units in the halo universe, cool concept, but ultimately very lacking. hr: dont understand all the hate.. easily my second favorite halo title. sticks to my favorite portion of halo: fighting covenant. also was visually (my opinion) UNTOUCHABLE by ANY other halo title since or prior. a very realistic, immersive, beautiful and grungy visual theme with attention to detail on everything from the sky to the the first person hands. consistent visuals fun gameplay, albeit contradictory (insert masters' opinion of it here) and slightly linear. still very fun to play and still my favorite h4: storywise, very cool direction, poor execution. visually painful. too much hate from del rio. poor cutscenes when characters speak.. there are volumes of things that are supposed to be shared by character interactions which i simply didnt get. visually painful. also visually painful. good attention to detail... up until the end of your gun. fp arms, legs, guns and spartans are okay. the rest. painful. ever try zooming in on a skybox? painful. such good art lowrezed to make it look like garbage. also the intorduction of green to covenant was the most appaling thing ive seen and excessive and poor use of bloom. gameplay and story id give it an 8. the visuals are in my opinon leagues behind reach which was 3 years behind it..

h1:best h2: good engine, but due to their short amount of time, they rushed it h3: one of favorites odst: sniper/beam combo all the way wars: meh... but I still need to be a general before it is 100% hr: great but awful as well h4: god awful and insulting to the original story in so many ways, also cortana doesn't know how to count because she told chief he was asleep for an amount of time which would be a year later than it actually was.
bottomline: halo 1 was the best, but it should have stopped after halo 3 and just have the mechanics put into a new game, like... mayo 1, 2 and 3 :P

I am so tired of people saying bungie had a short amount of time with H2. They had 3 whole years, 75% of the consoles lifespan to put out H2. They just didn't know what they were doing and screwed up it's development. Microsoft deserves praise for delaying the game for Bungie's sake so they could get everything together, it would have been a disaster if it were to be released as planned in Q1 of 2004.

In retrospect, I think Halo 2 gets a worse rap for its campaign than it deserves. The campaign is actually good; the problem when it launched was that the end basically came out of nowhere and everyone was pissed about the abrupt cliffhanger. However, now that there is a sequel to H2, it really seems like a much better game overall. The Covenant plot was a tiny bit convoluted, sure, but it gave the universe depth and made the conflict interesting.
As for this game VS that game.... IMO all the Halo games so far have been great experiences, and I enjoy the differences between them, both in terms of story content and gameplay. If we just got exact copies of the same game over and over, we'd get bored of it much quicker.

Story was a mess and they tried to do way to much without explaining what the heck was happening. I slightly had that issue with the story in Halo 3, but it was less of an issue. Halo 4 even had the issue, but it can at least be resolved by watching the terminals.
