Oh, okay. So just because waffles hasn't released something that you deem to be cool, you expect that you can act all arrogant and spoiled. I don't know what you think is cool, but the majority of this community views tutorials being worth more than tags themselves. It seems like you haven't seen his WIP and release thread either. Waffles did release some Reach spartans, and has contributed more to the community than you have so far.

Anyone can port from any game, but trying to mimic the material/shader setup of said game is not as easy in this engine. Seeing as waffles made a work-around to the messed up plasma shaders in Halo PC/CE when compared to the Xbox version, is that not "cool" enough for you? His latest tutorial about ambient reflections with visors using shader_transparent_chicago and chicago_extended tags, pretty close to Halo 3 if you ask me -> pretty "cool".

Next time please think before you post like an ignorant and arrogant fool.

Almost there. still waiting for 3.1.1 for detail normals to come back...

I absolutely hate making collision models, it takes me ages, and magically makes me lazy/procrastinate. inb4 "why don't you use default marine collision?" NO. No point in doing half the stuff I am if I skimp out on something that I can actually do (albeit annoying). The less people took shortcuts, the more people would learn how to do things

Cry about it? Dude you don't barely release you're tag there is no point to show off your tags when you don't even release them. Come on waffle fix up. I hate when someone does this.


To be honest, porting rips and recreating shaders isnt even that hard. The hardest thing you would have to do is collision models which are just boxs with a simple amount of edges. Smoothing groups are easy and rigging becomes easier the more you practice It really isnt up to par as creating your own assets.

I am not saying rips are bad, as thats how I learned to do most of the necessary stuff I can do now.
I just rage when I see people complaining about unrealeased ports lol. So just do it yourself.

i have yet to make an a^s of myself (i think), and i joined apr1 (or did i... because april fools). but seriously though i get tired of that junk too, i try not to complain about releases or lack thereof because i don't release anything. i don't do much halo modding because i prefer to mod skyrim, and cause i don't have much free time right now. so please, if u want more stuff released, read a few tuts (maybe even one from waffles, who has been so kind as to give them), make some sh^t, make it good, release it, and then shut up. (to be honest i do fuss at people about releases when people complain about lack of quality from somebody when they themself haven't released anything ever, because people that do that are low.)

Knife is cool, but I think you might be able to make it look better if you make it a wire that the electricity flows through instead of a block. Try looking at Dead Island or Dying Light's electric melee weapons

Looks like Timberland combined with the sky from either ONI Sword Base or Winter Contingency. (nice job with the porting, though~)

EDIT: Forget Winter Contingency, it's from ONI, I think.

The 3rd gen shader systems for the blam engine are pretty nifty, Had to fake quite a bit of stuff to get the colors looking fine (I swear reach did away with the max generated hdr skydomes...) And even then, CE doesn't allow per-pixel fog in the sky's, so the color isn't perfect overall.

I don't plan on releasing the sky, as it was just me testing things and checking out Reach's materials.


If you don't mind me asking, how did you assemble that skybox? The reach skybox files are all split up into different parts, I can't imagine one being able to get them all into a single image looking correct.

halo reach uses skyspheres, not skyboxes. there is geometry within the sphere that has textures applied to them to emulate various materials, ie moving clouds/smoke or water.

In my hurried excitement to post, I didn't take the time to test it ingame. It seemingly only works in sapien, along with a handful of other rasterizer commands. If masterz ever gets online I'll have a chat with him about it and see if they can get it working with OS, Btcc somehow got it working with HAC 2, if he is willing to share what process he did to get it working it shouldn't be hard to incorporate.

The sky system really hasn't changed all that much from each version of the engine as far as the mesh is perceived. There are a few changes to how the skies render in the newer games however.

The different "parts" of the sky are regions that seperate the mesh. By what in the newer iterations of the engine? I don't have a definitive answer. Either they swapped the order of render priority from CE (lower=outer most mesh, higher=closer to the player), or some other vague reason. If it was for render priority/transparency sorting there wouldn't really be a reason to do it since from 3rd gen and onward the sky's were put into the rarely used scenery tags.

As far as getting it into CE, you really don't need to do much work to the mesh, other than maybe setting up regions for transparency sorting. The only somewhat "difficult" part is emulating things that CE doesn't have support for normally, such as fog or the hdr color as in h3 sky's. There isn't any real new math as far as blending is concerned.

As long as a sky doesn't have any engine specific functions or shaders/materials any sky can be ported. I know h4 has some distortion in some of its skies, which could be faked with functions, but otherwise skies are incredibly simple.


But is there a way for me to combine all the different skybox parts into a single image to use as a environment map in 3ds max, for example?

the problem with this is that your rendered environment map will have a blank lower half.

Soooooo, I decided to work on a elite/covie version of the halo 1 HUD, and here's my progress.



I'm thinking of also creating new numbers were there the actual covie numbering system, but I'll make them the style of the current numbers, thin and slanted. Would you guys like that?
