It's true that web images should use gif and jpegs as they are small in size. Wallpapers and textures on the web can use the lossless png format. Png format is quite large and will take much longer to load than jpegs, which can cause people to lag. Consider others instead of only yourself.

Even wallpapers shouldn't be PNG's on the web. The ONLY reason to use a PNG on the web is for small graphics like buttons.
Fact: The human eye can't see the majority of the data from a PNG, JPEG's have all the colour data that is needed and that the eye can see.
People using PNGs are just being awkward for the sake of it, seeming as there is no actual advantage of using PNG's online. The ONLY advantage at all, which is a small one, is that the image wont blur SLIGHTLY due to compression, and you can't even see the blur.
The only way you will notice the difference between a PNG and JPEG is by putting them side by side. But that's the same as putting 30FPS video footage next to 70FPS video footage.
At 30FPS it is smooth, and it looks the same at 70FPS, until you put them side by side, then you see that 30FPS is slower...

Don't even give me that crap. A JPEG is terrible for wallpapers. You lose a considerable amount of quality with a JPEG. I usually use them, but if I need a high quality image to show detail, I use PNG. Edited by goldkilla88 on Jun 4, 2012 at 12:32 PM Desktop wallpaper you should use PNG's yeah, but not ON THE INTERNET... only in minor cases. JEPG's are fine for renders ect...

Okay, here's what I'll do. I'll go into 3DS max, take a render at 1920 x 1200, one as a PNG, one as a JPEG, whichever one loads faster, will prove the opposing argument or my argument. They are exactly the same render.
JPEG took about 1 second, PNG took about 3. My internet is certainly worse than yours, at least twice so. Can we stop this and get back on topic? Edited by Koo294 on Jun 6, 2012 at 11:56 AM

Into my Haloz, please. Are there any other aircraft in the game? You could rip them all and we could have dogfights. o.o Those blue circles on the leading edges of the wings would be good for weapon nodes, perhaps using the top set of wings for the primary weapon, and the lower set for the secondary. Not wasteing my time waiting for pointless data to be downloaded. In this case I actually agree. It's a 1920x1080px image, and would be slow to load even as a jpeg. When posting images on a forum, always DOWNSCALE them. Loading a ton of pointless data which then has to be auto-scaled by the forum; WITH loss of quality is ridiculous and annoying.

When posting images on a forum, always DOWNSCALE them. Loading a ton of pointless data which then has to be auto-scaled by the forum; WITH loss of quality is ridiculous and annoying. Unforchantly the moderator/admin is too arrogant to reason with. The is NO reason what-so-ever that PNG's are needed to be used. Let's have a look into PNG's Quote: Portable Network Graphics (PNG) is a bitmapped image format that employs lossless data compression. PNG was designed for transferring images on the Internet, not for professional-quality print graphics.
As you can see, the definition of PNG is Portable Network Graphics (transferring), so to transport images between two computers. Mainly so photographers can send an image to an editor without loosing any data, as PNG's do NOT compress the data. LinkQuote: This color plot, according to some studies (references pending), represents about 2.38 million colors that the human eye can detect under moderately high intensity lighting approximately the same color temperature and brightness of daylight
So, lets note down from the above quote that the human eye can see 2.38 million colors. Now lets see how much color data is included in making up a 24-bit PNG. LinkQuote: Usually, truecolor is defined to mean at least 256 shades of red, green, and blue, for a total of at least 16,777,216 color variations.
Hmm, there is quite a difference right there. At least 14 million wasted shades of color, which is all saved in one single file. So please tell me WHAT IS THE POINT in filling my flash memory full of useless data which in turn slows down other processes. Any good web developer will know that displaying large PNG's is utterly pointless and just down right awful. Now if this was a professional photography website then there is a purpose for PNG's but still NOT displayed directly, they would have a thumbnail saved as a jpg, and then a link to the large PNG which users can CHOOSE to download. Dennis: Quote: I will not ban the PNG format. Doing so would be ludicrous.

Ah, that's unfortunate. If you get the Tornado 3 in-game, though, can you release the tags? I'd like to use it some time.

I like the biplane, and I don't have a problem loading the image, so it doesn't matter where it came from, as long as I'll be able to use it at some point.
