Position the gun first, then worry about hand placement. That's what I do, it yields decent results.

Like, imagine if this were an FPS that showed no hand models (IE Quake III or UT2004), and get it to look decent. Theeeen place the arms and hands.

I'd suggest setting up IKs. In fact, they're pretty much necessary. CAD's IK setup is a decent quick way to do it.

Adding on to that, make sure you bend both elbows before you use the script or else it won't work right. At least for me it didn't.

I'm using gmax here. It does have one IK solver but I don't really know how to use it.

EDIT:
It decided to try again from scratch after tweaking the model slightly.

Theres my second attempt. Please ignore the arms, as I am just trying to get the weapon placement perfect.

What's good and what's bad about this version?

its aiming to low. rotate the gun up a bit, or move it up a bit.

It's not just that. The sight is taking up a massive amount of space and draws your attention away from the rest of the gun. I'd hate to walk around with that constantly in my case.

The gun is extremely centered horizontally, which I can imagine will result in some pretty awkward positioning of the left hand. I would move it up, to the right, and out. (Obviosuly this would take some fine-tuning). Then I'd position the hands/arms and re-position the gun to compensate for any problems the hands cause. This may just be a result of experience, but I've found that there's generally a point where origins look "right", and you can tell that they're right. Sometimes it takes some serious experimentation; especially if the gun has a lot of really "distracting" parts you may need to get creative to balance them out.

And, here's the conclusion of the Flamethrower animating.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kP1Dr_u8X6Q

Probably going to take a break from these for a few days now as I've got a full week away from my computer ahead of me, but there might be another one that squeezes in this weekend.

I just tried two new ones. Tell me what you think, as I want to get these origins right before I actually start animating.

Both look okay by my standards. Roll with whichever is easier to position FP arms for, I guess.

Ro0ster, how I normally do my origins is I put the gun in a somewhat good position, do the hands, and THEN move the gun around even more until it looks right. I almost never have it in the exactly right spot I want when just placing the gun.

I watched that video last night Lag. Awsome stuff. It really makes me want to animate something but then I would just stop halfway through doing origins...

I do that.
I can't animate for anything.. But I make pretty cool origins :P

Here are some origins I made for the H3 ODST SMG on this website.

Yes, I know about the clipping errors etc. I like these the way they are. I'm probably not going to ever animate them, so do what you want.

@tucker: ugly, ugly origins. so huge and makes the model look more boxy than it already is.
move further away, to the right, and down, then rotate it to face the middle of screen

Is it better?

The position of the gun is fine at the moment, it's the pistol model. It sucks monkey balls. it is way too wide.

The problem with descriptions like this is that they lack perspective. If you were the monkey you would probably think it is a good thing.

It isn't the 3p model. It's the fp model surprisingly. Look how bad it was back then...

Are you deaf and ignorant? GO look at the grenade launcher m16 model, it has a different barrel you retard.

They all have different attachments/modeling. Also if the m16 grenade launcher he showed was the 3p. It would be basically a box. Besides you know IW wouldn't model a cylinder in a 3p model for the sides.

Be sure to add smoothing groups to that if you get the chance, it'll make all the edges around the round parts much less noticeable.

It is more or less a crude descriptive way of saying it looks bad. We are all human yes? So no problem with the perspective :)
