I've certainly noticed a slump in overall numbers, but since I've been playing in 2008-2010, the biggest decline I've noticed, was the players who only ever used Vanilla maps, who don't really count.

And with the relatively recent increase in quality of SP maps, I feel there's still plenty of life left in CE. Not least of all the modding community.

Halo experienced a splurge in 2011 to date as Europeans "discovered" a pretty cool game which you can also make mods easily with.

(By europeans I mean mainly ppl from spain but gloss over that)

Using what I have said if we market Halo as free game to other bankrupt countries I think the demand will outweigh the question of halo custom editions longevity.

As far as player population, and a pool of talented map-makers/modders is concerned this community is as dead as it gets.

^
the only thing deader than us is the earthworm-jim fandom

And Boogerman.

Both games are good by the by.

Oh and the PSP scene.

Things will stay alive and or die depending on your own and our own actions. I wouldn't say Halo CE is dead yet as there are a few active members and the list of servers (if you have HAC2) is outstanding. Halo CE is still populated. There's more players playing CE than people playing Aliens VS Predator.

It also depends on the continuation of the Halo series, maybe not on PC, but on console.

I would not be surprised if at the release of every new halo game there is a slight increase in interest for playing 'a Halo game' on PC, and the really only viable place to do that (especially if you want new content) is CE.

I could easily see CE lasting another decade. I've been around since before CE was released, and it's always been like this. The fan base survived Gearbox dropping support for the game, as well as the release of Halo 2. Once the game made it to 2005, it was clear that it would be a cult game for the foreseeable future.

Also, I haven't played in well over a year... is the player count up now on v.1.10? Last I played (1.9) there were about 200 players on vanilla maps, and a couple 24/7 servers on Immure. Is it still like that?

On a Monday night, and I've seen twice that number in recent times.
