So at my school I have access to the student version of 3DS Max. I can choose 2012, 2013, 2014, or 2015. In your opinion, which would be best for map making? Thanks for your help!

2013 is the best.

2008.

Otherwise I'd say 2012

Most people will say 2013, so I would go with the majority.

However, I use 2014 and it works great with Service Pack 5 installed.

Depends what your using on it, in my opinion the 2008 version so you can install the Halo Exporter, plus it has all the tools that I use, don't really use any of the new tools in the newer versions.

Only reason I have the newer versions is, well, because I like new toys :)

If you use a version that does not support Blitzkrieg, then use the Bluestreak exporter. And if you can't import .wrl files, then use the chimp importer.

I use those two without a problem. However, you might find it convenient to use a version of max that supports Blitzkrieg and imports .wrl.

Halo mapping was intended to be used with Max 8 in mind as far as I know. However, as many here have said, in the later versions there are other ways to go about working with BLAM. 2010 with bluestreak works with very little issue. 2011-2013 make you have to close max before running anything through tool, but 2014 works similarly to 2010 in compatability terms

Halo was meant to be modded in Max 5 the support for 6, 7 and 8 was added by Ghost.
