I don't see a point in protecting maps these days, not just because they'd be ripped anyway, but I figure people may as well be allowed to extract anything I've made so they can learn from it. I remember Matt and I would rip maps (CMT, Zteam) for fun back when we couldn't really make our own stuff, but I certainly learned a lot from that.

Maps were protected because people didn't want others to be making unofficial maps with them or very bad maps at that (eg, bloodgulch mod).
At this point in time people have discovered ways of reverse engineering protected maps so you wont find many anymore.
Either way its kinda dumb - I personally believe in that anyone should have access to them to learn and benefit from, and most importantly have fun. It's not like any of this is for profit, and the only thing that will come out if it is people learning how to mod the game. There may be some bad maps, but who cares? If they are bad, it will be reflected by no one playing them.

There was once a fear that people would use other peoples content to make counterfeit maps that didn't represent the actual team and people who put work into it. However, this was back when there were huge map teams everywhere, each with it's own tagset and designing their own gameplay.
As it turned out, many of them fell apart or left the community. CMT is the only one who has fallen "victim" to counterfeit maps, but in the end it hasn't effected us that much. People realize MPG3 wasn't the same team, although we still get some flack for SPV2 Betas people played that we never worked on.

To be clear, All Maps made by users are "unofficial maps". Quote: --- Original message by: FrostyCyphre So Halomaps I ask you. Did you all find your “somethings” in this broken forum that just won’t die? If you wish to discuss the pros and cons of the protection schemes people have tried you are free to do so as long as you remain civil and polite. If however you have some axe to grind take it elsewhere I have no patience for childish trolling. The forum is here for people to discuss the Halo Custom Edition game in a reasonable manner. If you are trying to troll you will be removed.

I think you knew pretty well what he meant by that. Don't be a pedant.

They are "franskenstien" weapons they take halo reach and halo 4 models and mix them with poorly extracted and exported anims and particles by Zteam and CMT. Honestly just extract the halo models and use H2 or H1 anims, better off with those. Their tags are also missing some shaders and the same way they extracted them are placed in the tag so they are very very heavy. And they compile their maps using tool pro which makes things worse.

So... Which command or program do I need to compile maps? (Please don't say OS) :(

if you have new items and protect them, you are only hindering the rest of us hce mappers to possibly use the new items to make better maps...
I dont know how many poor maps i have found that have great items... or ones i fixed.
The only time i will protect a map is if i release it as an alpha or beta through the means of gamefont and post here.
