2013 is the worst out of now.
I suggest you to use max 8 or 10

I use it. What's wrong with it? It seems to make working in editable poly a hell of a lot easier than 2010 too.

no .wrl import so it sucks for bsp's.

for bsp's use max 2010 32 bit.

Well you should always have more than one installed if you can. I used to have max 8 installed with my 2012 but I have yet to re-install since I got my SSD.

I believe you can use the chimp.ms script to import .wrls?

Well, that's how I had to figure out things. I have Max 2012, and using chimp.ms to import .wrls helped.

Yeah I use 3ds max 2013 Design to work on B30:E's bsps, and it's fine. I use chimp to import wrls and I use bluestreak to export. As long as I follow the sealed world rules it works like a charm for me.

I couldn't use tool while 2013 was open after export of a model or animations; "file is open in another program". 2013 apparently likes to hold onto your models and animation files after you export, which forced me to restart 2013 every time i exported a model. 2010 supports nearly all scripts developed for CE, and actually allows me to use tool at the same time...

That's bizarre, I don't have that problem when I work. What are you using to export? Bluestreak and 2013 Design never hold onto the file for me, idk why that's popping up on your end. And other than Blitzkrieg, which hasn't worked in most max versions past 8, I haven't found any scripts that don't work anymore.

I first used Max 7 back in the day when I came into the community, and after a reformat I got Max 8. Haven't used anything else since.

Yeah 8 is a great program, but I fell in love with the later versions' walkthrough camera feature. I rarely use any other camera type while working. Having much better real time viewport rendering is also a huge plus.

I don't like 2013 because of some bugs not related to CE.

The two main ones I've noticed are that being able to weld uvs from different "depths" is disabled by default, though it can be re-enabled easily via script, and also sometimes the scale button doesn't work right in uvw unwrap (in rare occasions it will snap back to its original position after you try to scale something, until you collapse and reapply the unwrap uvw modifier). I've also noticed that sometimes if you move something in the geometry the lines will move, but the visual shape will stay the same until you force update it by switching the model to edit poly or switching from vertex edit mode to face edit, that sort of thing. But I could see how those would get annoying, I've just learned to deal with them. I view the better features of 2013 as a worthwhile tradeoff.

I have 2012 somewhere and i used to use it for work unrelated to HCE, but I have also had 8 since its release, and from my knowledge, it is one of the most stable for working with CE.

There is also a annoying little bug when in wire frame mode, sometimes you can't switch back to shaded with F3. You have to do it manually.

Ah, true, I forgot about that one. They're all fairly small, but agreed, very annoying.

So in summary it would seem the consensus is:

Max 8 is most stable for HCE, Max 2010 also works great, 2013 is functional with cool features but is quite buggy.

Seriously though, it's better to downgrade to 3ds Max 2010, no laggy performance problem

Psh get a better graphics card :P
